Managing to slip the servants and guards, Princess Rhaena got onto the Streets of Lys alone, something she had not managed to do in Tyrosh, thanks to the attentions of the Archon's Son.
She wore a light shirt and good quality breeches, the breeches black and the shirt a deep blue, making her eyes appear more so, just by coincidence, not by design.
As soon as she was away from the palace, she let her hair down, so it fell over her back, and wondered the streets, taking in the sights.
She was looking particularly, of any of the temples or any buildings that might appear to be libraries.

She saw two major temples, one for a Lyseni love goddess, the naked woman who was depicted on the coins, and the other a temple of R'hllor. There was no obvious library so she would need to seek help if she wanted one.

Rhaena contemplated the love temple, but instead went to see the temple of r'hllor instead, knowing court had a new sorceress who worshipped that other false god.
She entered the temple, having no idea about any traditions of the religion and walked round, looking at the statues and the decoration there. Keeping an eye on the practices the genuine worshipers used.

She saw men and women singing before a great fire in the centre of the room, beseeching R'hllor to protect them from the darkness and keep the darkness at bay. The officials were both male and female and all wore red robes, some decorated with flame insignia. As Rhaena watched, the priest officiating at the ceremony made a motion and the flame turned from orange to purple.

Rhaena stared in fascination at the congregation, looking with great interest at the man leading the service. Her eyes lit up as he changed the colour of the flame, but she had heard of substances that could do something similar. It was impressive none the less.
She stood to the side, waiting for the ceremony to be over.

As Rhaena waited, she became aware of a man watching her, a stockier man of swarthy complexion who was somewhat of a contrast to the tall fair Lyseni with their pale skin and hair. This man had relatively short hair that curled wildly, in an artlessly attractive way. His eyes were a deep green, that Rhaena had rarely seen before, and he leaned against the side of a building just watching her and not really trying to keep it a secret.

Rhaena looked round at him and then back to the service, but still felt his eyes on her, and so turned fully and walked towards him, not wanting to shout across the room.
"Is there something the matter?" she asked, raising an eyebrow, resting her hands lightly on her hips. She noticed the difference in him that most of the Lysene she had met since coming, making him stand out even more.

The man replied in a voice that was deeper that Rhaena would have expected, his Valyrian words flowing musically. Her limited knowledge of High Valyrian allowed her to pick a few words out of the sentence, something about the 'eyes of the moon'.
"You are the Princess of the Westerosi," he added, switching to that tongue stating a fact rather than asking a question. "I am Rafael Lohar, the Magister of the Waves," he added, as if the title would make sense to her, and he bowed deeply, bringing Rhaena's hand to his lips.

"A pleasure, I am sure," she said a little coldly, not being happy for not understanding him, despite the pleasant way he spoke. She took her hand back and looked him in the eye, she knew enough of the term Magister to know that he was someone of importance here, but did not know anything of his particular title.
"Rafael Lohar," she repeated, liking the way it rolled off her tongue, "I am Rhaena Targaryen. Do you stare at all Princesses that you happen upon?"

"Just so, I do," he said with a slight laugh, bowing a little. "Princesses are not a common sight in Lys, nor are the riders of dragons besides. I confess I have only seen one, but she is enough to put all others to shame," he added with a shameless small wink.
"You have my thanks, Princess, and the thanks of all Lyseni though many do not remember enough to offer it," he added, his voice growing serious. "It is to your ancestor, Aegon Targaryen, that we owe our freedom from Volantis' yoke, and I would be remiss if I did not offer my gratitude on the half of this Daughter."
Rhaena's lessons in history and politics came back to her, she remembered that after the Doom of Valyria a Volantene fleet seized Lys while a Volantene army seize Myr, and for two generations all three cities were ruled from within the Black Walls of Volantis. Rhaena recalled that about a decade before Aegon led his conquest of Westeros, the Triarch of Volantis attempted to annex Tyrosh, which was allied with the city of Pentos and the Westerosi Storm King, Argilac Durrendon. Aegon Targaryen flew forth from Dragonstone on the Balerion the Black Dread, and Myr and Lys rose up in rebellion against Volantis. The war left the Disputed Lands a waste and freed Lys and Myr to declare themselves independent city-states.
She also recalled that citizens of Myr, Lys, and Tyrosh often referred to their cities as the "Daughters of Valyria".

"Though I am sure he was thanked at the time, on behalf of King Aegon, I accept your gratitude," she said formally, then smiled a bit, "Long may the good relations of our states last, it is for the benefit of us all."
She paused for a long moment and then narrowed her eyes slightly, as if feeling him out, "Tonight is my turn to watch the dragons, not that they need it, you are welcome to come and see them again, if you would like to. Tyraxes has an angry soul, but Glutton is pleasant enough, just do not get too close."

The Magister's eyes widened slightly, but he recovered with a smooth smile, nodding. "It would please me greatly, to be honored so, my Princess," he said. It was not a possessive statement, and after a moment Rhaena realized that he was assuming that Princesses were called 'my Princess' as Ladies were called 'my Lady', in polite company. "I have heard that the Magister of State means to throw a great masquerade at dusk, to honor the greatness of the Goddess, and to celebrate the royal presence of yourself and the Prince Aegon. Do you enjoy such things in your home of Westeros?"

"We have been at war for a long time, it has not really been a time for parties and celebrations," she said, realising they did not even have a celebration party when the war was only, the party Daenya threw for herself the only one she had been too that was not political in a long time, "I am sure we shall throw many in time, when the dust has settled, and of course, the wedding of the Crown Prince and myself will surely be a cause itself."
She did not mind the incorrect title, and smiled a little more, she liked the sound of it, and why not, "Well, meet me at the Magister's entrance when the moon is at it's highest, and you will get the chance to see them. Do not be late though, I am not very patient," it was her turn to wink now.

The Magister laughed again lightly, contrasting against his deep voice. "I would not be dreaming of it, my Princess; tardiness is viewed as a grievous insult in Lys and Lyseni men always keep their promises. Perhaps I will be seeing you are the Masquerade, though I am sure you will see me; my mother's blood makes me rather stand out among my countrymen. Like yourself, much of Lys and all of the Magisters boast the blood of Valyria," he said.
He leaned forward, with a somewhat conspiratorial grin, and lowered his voice as if he were sharing a coveted secret. "My mother was being Rhoynish, you see. It is no secret, though if I did not own more ships than the rest of the Magisters combined, they would likely remove seek my removal from the council," he added, with a confident laugh indicating his surety that pigs would fly with dragons before such a thing could be possible.

"Well then, you are fortunate you have so many ships," She said, grinning at him, "and so am I. Blood is always a good thing to have, but blood without the means to keep yourself at the top is fairly pointless," she said with a nod, "it is even more fortunate you possess both."
"I take it you will be attending the ball, Masquerades are not our favourite, but we have been in told it would be seen as very rude if we did not attend. It will be interesting to see a real Lys party."

"It is said that the women of Westeros are far too repressed; I suspect the tone of our parties would be somewhat scandalous to many, though I am sure you will enjoy great attention from the guests," he replied, his eyes running blatantly over her body. "Men will come from all over the city, for a sight of the Dragon Princess."

"The andals may be repressed, and my brother may emulate them, but real dragons do not care for all of that silly restraint," she assured him, with a wolfish grin, not minding his wondering gaze, "let all the people in Lys come if they will, I shall not disappoint them."

"I am sure no man or woman who comes with you could ever be disappointed by the experience," the Magister replied suggestively, matching her predatory grin.

"I have not had any complaints yet," she said, raising an eyebrow and then turned her gaze back to the worshipers, "Is it true they worship just the one god?"

"I am certain you have not," Rafael replied with a wink, before also turning his attention to the Red Temple. "Indeed, they believe there are but two gods in all the world; their God of Light and Fire, R'hllor and the Other, who seeks to destroy all the world. It is a queer form of worship to be sure, but the Free Cities offer and allow many forms of worship so long as they cause no harm," he added with a small shrug.

"God of fire?" she asked rhetorically, speaking more to herself, "Is there a temple here to the Old Valyrian Gods? There must be some here in Lys that still worship them, or have some knowledge about them," she questioned not looking round, "books on it, or someone who knows about it."

"Indeed there is, my Princess," Rafael replies. He gave her a quick series of directions, based on landmarks that could be seen from where they were standing. "Perhaps twenty minutes on foot from here, though I would hire a litter and the slaves to carry it, so that you may travel in comfort and ease as befits your station," he added with a smile. "They have a grand library, I am told."

"I much prefer to be active," she said, smiling, "Sitting in litters makes one get unfit, which as a dragon rider is something I cannot afford. Dragons take plenty of stamina to ride," she assured him, and looked at the ceremony again, still waiting for it to finish so she could speak to the man leading it, "what title does the man taking the service go by?"

Magister Rafael's eyes traveled appreciatively over her body again, and he nodded knowingly. "Indeed, it must be so. You surely do not maintain so fantastic a figure by lazing about. I do not know his title, but I offer my apologies in its place, my Princess," he confessed with a sheepish expression. He looked up at the sky, taking in the position of the sun, and then his eyes flicked back to Rhaena's face.
"I offer them again, my Princess, but I must depart for I have business to attend this hour. Perhaps, if I am lucky, you shall reveal yourself to me at the Masquerade, but if not I shall see you when the Moon is at her height," he said with an apologetic smile and a bow, taking Rhaena's hand once again and kissing her knuckles gently.
