After returning to Darkheart Keep, Maekar had Vira brought immediately to the Maester, remaining at her side as the man did his work examining her and stitching up her wounds. He paid no heed whatsoever to his torn tunic, caked to the wound on his back with dried blood, nor to his leg from which red drops were still leaking to the floor. He clasped Vira's hand tightly, though she was unconscious from blood-loss and the milk of the poppy, and he maintained a glare focused on the Maester, hinting of terrible repercussions if he did not do his job to satisfaction.

When Vira woke, Maekar was still sitting at her side, holding her hand. He was shirtless, and a bandage was wrapped around his chest, pressing a pad of linen against the newly sewn axe-wound on his back. His left leg was also bandaged, though blood had begun to seep through the white linen. He looked like he hadn't slept in days, and his eye was red and puffy, though he smiled tenderly when her eyes opened and Vira felt his lips press lightly on her knuckles.

As the fog of poppy-induced sleep slowly cleared from Vira's mind, she slowly took in their surroundings. There was momentary confusion on her face as she took in the arched windows of Darkheart, for her nightmares had been terrible. Then slowly comprehension dawned on her, as she realized her love had sat by her side for days as she rested, and been bandaged as he sat. Tears sprang into her eyes as she was overwhelmed with emotion. It was worth it, to have endured so much pain and suffering and fear in the forest, to have known and experienced devotion such as this.
But her next thought was of the baby, as she smiled back weakly and squeezed his hand feebly with her fingers. "The...baby...?" she asked questioningly, her voice thin and soft.

"The Maester said it will be alright, though how he could know…" Maekar trailed off, in a voice that was choked and broken. "I am sorry that I failed you," he whispered in a tiny voice.

"You were wonderful," she said firmly. "I would not want to be with anyone else in that situation. I - I let you down. If I hadn't left the axe..."

Maekar moved closer and kissed her gently on her cheek; the one that did not have stitches. The cut was small, and likely would not scar, compared to the wounds on her back and collarbone, which would always bear the marks of Muriel's knife. "I swore to protect you, and I failed. If I had revealed myself to them, they may have told us all we wanted to know in fear."

"It was my idea to go in disguise," Vira said. She flushed as he kissed her cheek, lightly touching the scar on her collarbone, and imagining the one on her back. "I won't be beautiful for you anymore," she said, averting her eyes at the thought.

"You are a battle-angel now, all the fiercer for your scars," Maekar murmured in her ear, his grip on her hand tightening as he slid his fingers in between hers. "Even dragons bleed, and not even wounds such as mine could mar your beauty."

Overwhelmed with love and gratitude, Vira pulled Maekar closer fiercely and kissed him, a long, deep, passionate kiss. "You haven't slept at all, have you my sweet?" she asked tenderly. "Come, lie beside me and have your rest." She lifted up the furs, with a soft smile.

Maekar carefully climbed onto the bed beside Vira's, releasing her hand. He lay beside her, on his side propped up on one elbow, but careful not to touch her. "Sleep, and heal, love. Please. I will rest, I promise, but you need it more than I. I will not leave your side."

"I've been doing nothing but sleeping," she teased gently, gently sliding his arm around her and very gingerly nestling closer, careful not to disturb Maekar's own wounds. "I'll rest better when I hear you snore. Never thought I'd say that."

"I don't snore," Maekar whispered in a scandalized tone, laughing at Vira as he embraced her ever so carefully.
"And you're one to talk besides, kicking around like a horse even under the furs," he added, sounding increasingly drowsy.

"I don't kick," she said indignantly, her voice also drifting into soft, sleepy murmurs. "Your feet are too cold for me to get anywhere near...them..." And a moment later, the milk of the poppy had sent her back into a doze.

Before long, Maekar was snoring quietly beside her.

///////////////////////////////////////////// About a week later, Maekar departed for the capital, and returned four days after that with Visenya in tow. He came to see Vira in her apartments straight away, after seeing that Visenya was settled into the Lady's chambers. He found Vira sleeping, and though he was loathe to disturb her peaceful beauty, he put a gentle hand on her shoulder and bent to kiss her lightly on the lips. "Awaken, my love," he whispered. "We have much to discuss, and little time in which to do so."

Vira had been dozing, for she had spent the morning in a state of anxiety and needed rest. The sight of Maekar calmed her a little as she awoke. It was so pleasant to be awoken with a kiss, and the sight of him made her feel safe and reassured. "I've missed your arms about me," she said warmly, kissing him back as if she had longed to taste him again. "But we must talk first, my love. I have received word from my birds. You'll forgive me for spying, I know, but I was curious about your betrothed and mine. My people tracked them for days, but they are clever, those traitorspawn, and I could discover little."
Vira sat up slowly, propped by cushions. "Your Visenya has apparently been meeting with that loud, brazen fellow in secret - remember the man who was insulting me at Baelon Waters' wedding while I tried to speak to Prince Aegon? Your uncle, I believe - Aerion. Visenya has been meeting with him in secret. What do you make of that? And she's also been consorting with some Braavosi merchant fellow who is friendly with her mother and sister. Do you know who this is?"
"And as for Rhaegar, my dear intended one, he has been meeting some silk merchant in the city named Kern, and has some private plot afoot - my people could tell - but I don't know what it is. I'm worried. It's like flying in the dark, into a big yawning trap."

"Braavosi merchant? Master Delinaal, most like. He owns more than half the winesinks and taverns in King's Landing, and operates all kinds of businesses out of them. I believe he is an associate of one of the Five Families of Braavos, the five powerful houses that control the city," Maekar replied thoughtfully. "I have dealt with him myself, on occasion, but if he is meeting with Visenya and her kin then they must be planning... something," he added with a frown. "Aerion... an odd choice, but I care little who warms Visenya's sheets, when I have you to warm mine," he said, leaning down to kiss her again.
"I know nothing of this silk merchant, but perhaps I ought to pay him a visit when I return to the capital," he said slowly.

"Is your uncle Aerion powerful?" Vira asked, drawing Maekar to sit beside her on the bed. She slid her arm through his as she thought. "For a moment I was confused because Lord Commander Brandon Snow has a white dragon named Aerion, I must admit - does your uncle have a dragon? Incomes? What could he possibly give Visenya, besides a willing cock?"

"Not at all. He is Aenar's brother, and not as disfavored as the traitorspawn, but neither is he loved at court. The smallfolk whisper that he is something of a madman, and dark rumors have followed that one for as long as I can remember. He was betrothed to a daughter of Lord Greyjoy, in exchange for the Ironborn aiding us against the Redwyne fleet. His dragon is Servys, a strong beast to be sure but not nearly a match for Cyrax or Aegerys," Maekar replied with a shrug.
"What I have to say dwarfs either of those concerns, however," he said, his face falling. "The King means to claim your child as his own," Maekar murmured quietly; Vira noted that this was the first time he hadn't referred to the baby as 'our child'.

Vira slowly sat straighter, anger slowly growing in her heart. Interfering, arrogant Maegor. She should not have been surprised, but this intrusion into what Vira saw as her private family life made her boil. Rationally, she knew that the child had an equal chance of being Maegor's or Maekar's, but she clung to the memories of her village midwife's lessons to convince herself that Maekar was truly the father. And they had believed it, in the forest - they had been in their free, happy bubble of love, without a care in the world except kissing and fucking on the forest floor, and dreaming together of the future afterwards. Since coming to Darkheart, the dream of their forest life was slowly being stripped away by reality, and it made Vira feel afraid.
"No," she said fiercely, taking Maekar's hand in her own. "Remember that my old village midwife said that an old man's seed is nothing compared to the virility of a younger man's? And she always said that one time wasn't enough to plant it either. We have embraced under the furs far more often than I have with him, I know it's yours Maekar, I know it. Don't let him claim it!" But her pragmatic mind warred with her heart. Vira had come to know what love and devotion felt like since falling for Maekar, but she was not a fool either. A part of her reasoned that there was little they could do.

"There is more," Maekar said in a raw voice. Vira could see his fist clenched so tightly on the coverlit that his knuckles were white and the tendons in his arm were standing out in sharp relief. "Our marriages are even more of a sham than we thought. When Rhaena returns from the east with Aegon, and gives him a heir, the King intends to kill Aegon and declare that child heir, to be raised by the crown. I am to be married to Rhaena as Prince Consort, to rule by her side, after having killed Visenya, Rhaegar, and Elseyris," he said.
He watched Vira's face carefully as he spoke; they had spoken of his relationship with Rhaena, and the depth of his feelings for the Princess, and he stared at Vira desperately, trying to say that he wanted her instead of Rhaena and a crown but the conflict within him was as plain on his face as his lack of an eye.

Vira took in this news with a shocked expression. It upturned all their plans, and for a moment it worried her. But after she thought for a moment, she said lightly, "What is there to fear, my love? All that we could hope for may yet be ours. I have always seen you as a ruler, and my dream for you is coming true. And the Prince Regent can have his mistress as well as his wife, can he not?" She smiled. "And as the widow of Rhaegar, I would get some legitimacy. We can still be together." We just have to wait.
There was only one thing that worried her. "So instead of Visenya, your wife is to be Rhaena," she said lightly. "Was she not - your - love?"

Maekar looked at her with a pained expression and it was clear that it was not a matter of 'was'; the pain of learning about Rhaena and Trajan had been plain during their hunt, but he had begun to heal during the weeks spent with Vira in the kingswood, only to have the wounds torn open again.
"But, our child. The king will claim it, and it will be taken from us," he said in a choked voice.

"I won't let him do that!" Vira raged. Her dream was being threatened before her eyes - not the dream of seeing Maekar on the Iron Throne, but the dream of her husband and the father of her baby, all of them living together in domestic peace even if the dream of marriage was still yet distant. She hated the idea of not publicly being able to tell her baby of its fatherhood, the fatherhood she was convinced was right. And it burned her deeply to see the love for Rhaena plain on Maekar's face. That stung. Vira would have tolerated a political marriage cheerfully, but she hated the idea of Maekar saying his vows to a woman who still had sway over his heart.
She briefly fantasized about them running away together, but dismissed it as impossible. Life was not a woodland adventure, she had learned that lesson long ago. Besides, there was no corner of the earth that Aegerys and Cyrax could take them to, that Balerion could not find. There was no escape.
"The King is a blight upon this family," she said softly.
