Remember what I said about the private boards? A lot of that stuff is going to have to go and one or two other things as well, by the looks of it. I can handle the private stuff but if anyone can think of anything else that is a bit dodgy in the public forums please bring it to my attention so I can fix it. Thanks

Yeah. Thought they'd stopped worrying about such matters but I guess not. So we'll need to tone it down and those who are interested in such things will need to make alternative arrangements outside of the forum.

Am I the only person who thinks that a Knight of the Kingsguard assaulting a Princess of the Royal Family is a ludicrous suggestion? This is clearly not just some baby-time training fights with toy swords, since I'm assuming that the Lord Commander cares about the integrity of his Kingsguard and wants to actually test Arenya. So, would Ser Jon Gaunt really take an action that could result in him striking or harming a royal princess? Doesn't that go against EVERYTHING the KIngsguard stand for? In the Hedge Knight, Baelor rode specifically because he knew the KG would have to shy away from him, since they could never risk harming a Targaryen.

The reason I went for it is that if Arenya is to join them, she should try her mettle against the existing brothers in order to be seen as a worthy addition to their ranks. Is that such a bad idea?
I think the problem with the trial of seven is that there is the potential for death as the rules state that both Dunk and Aerion must be killed or Aerion withdraw his accusations, else all seven combatants on one side must be killed. So Baelor knows the Kingsguard knights have to avoid him for that reason yet we see at least one of the Humphreys is killed in the combat, which reinforces the message of it being deadly.
This is clearly not anywhere near what Snow intends. Thing is, fighting is dangerous even if death is not intended. I know we see the dangerous opponents avoiding Prince Valarr in the joust which takes place in the Hedge Knight but we're told about Ser Arlan jousting with Baelor Breakspear, Rhaegar at Harrenhal and I believe the Prince of Dragonflies is listed as a tourney opponent of one of the Kingsguard in the White Book. As we learn from both the Hedge Knight and the novels, there is a lot of potential for serious injury (Humphrey Hardying via Aerion) and death (Hugh of the Vale via Gregor) in tourneys and those are just the ones where the incidents are deliberate. I genuinely don't believe every single tourney which featured a royal person resulted in that person winning because everyone was too scared to hurt them.
To be honest, the other reason was that the Kingsguard are the ideal candidates in terms of pre-created NPCs as they have a high enough skill to present a genuine challenge. Using one or two of them also lessens the number of random people I have to invent!
I'm going to let Stranger decide if Ser Jon's challenge to Arenya is appropriate or not, seeing as he's Lord Commander.

I mean there are any number of NPCs who could fill this role just as well, who aren't oathsworn to protect the King and his family at all times. It just seems to me like a contradiction of his oath.

I get that and obviously he wouldn't be fighting her in normal circumstances but as this is her trying out for the Kingsguard, I don't think normal rules need apply. There's also various aspects of Ser Jon's personality that would prompt him to do it unless specifically told no by Snow or the king. But let's see what Stranger thinks. This is "his" thing so he should have final say.
I will try to throw some other NPCs at her later as well, as she's got 48 hours.

The King has told the LC Fairly bluntly that he cares nothing for the security of targaryens besides himself. The king's attitude towards his relatives in general would carry over too i think, and we probably all agree that maekar doesn't coddle. Given the level of disagreement Jon probably has about a female kingsguard he could feel its worth the chance of reprimand. He has already been passed over for command and now they are putting a woman in his ranks after all.

Yeah, most of those were my reasons too. Seems to me that the King believes his relatives can look after themselves, and that they aren't worth worrying about if they can't. The only person I think who has even a potential claim to dispute Maaegor's use of the Kingsguard is Rhaella since they are meant to be co-rulers even though he is the official monarch as per Andal custom. To be honest if she wants an equivalent she'll just make her own Queensguard!
It's clear that the king has the right to dispose of the Kingsguard as he sees fit. If I remember rightly GRRM says that some kings used them to guard immediate family, some used them as generals, some used them as an elite bodyguard for himself alone. That last option is closer to Maegor's current attitude.

You'll probably want to RP with her though, since she is no longer just standing there waiting to be attacked.

Laena looked at the two girls "My dears, this war has been raging since before either of you were born. I was a young woman when it began. I am tired of war. I wish to study in peace and see my grandchildren marry and have children of their own. I have worked all my life for the betterment of my house. So many lives have been lost in this war. It must end soon and this Faith Militant must be exterminated." She looked hard at them both. "This Faith is no good to any man or woman."
