Several days into their hunt, Vira and Maekar fly to Bronzegate, a nearby castle owned by Lord Buckler, to see the Maester about the pox that he had caught from Aenar's Spawn; just one of many treasons his line had wrought. After a week in the Kingswood, they also hoped to enjoy Lord Buckler's hospitality, and perhaps a bath and a feather bed.
The pair of dragons lands outside the gates of the castle, and Maekar dismounts from the dragon, jumping lightly to the ground, calling up to the gate guards. "Ho! Tell the Lord Buckler that the Lord of Darkheart and his companion, Lady Vira Ghostrider, request his hospitality for the night!"
He lowered his voice substantially, and turned his head to Vira, who had dismounted and stood beside him. "Better than 'Dragonseed', eh?" he asked with a grin.

OOC: just one of many treasons his line had wrought, ahahahaha. The rush of wind that blew in her face as Aegerys descended revived Vira, who had been going without sufficient sleep for too long and had been dozing off on his back as he flew abreast with Cyrax. The pain that the pox had caused had not helped her, and she cursed that bitch Visenya for giving it them, if indeed it was from her as Maekar suspected. The ivory dragon landed with a thump beside his black brother, and she slipped slowly to the ground, wincing. Vira's headache was only slightly improved when she heard Maekar refer to her as "Vira Ghostrider". " Much better," she said with a pinch on his buttocks. She looked up at the castle with a sigh. "Gods, I could use a bath and feather bed. I'm already getting spoiled rotten."

The guards admitted them readily, and Lord Buckler prepared a modest feast, serving them to a freshly killed boar in his Hall and offering a pair of guest apartments for the night. They each went to see the Maester separately, and Vira was given a vile potion that she was instructed to take over several days, while Maekar was forced to undergo an awful procedure that is too awful to describe. They were both instructed not to lie with anyone for at least a week, but were told they would be cured. Maekar threatens him with an awful fate, should rumors of their afflictions spread beyond his office. [Apprentice Intimidation]
After an extremely long bath, Maekare and Vira wound up snuggled beneath a down blanket in a feather bed covered in pillows. Maekar slid his arm around Vira, so that her head rested in the crook of his shoulder, the palm of his hand flat against her lower back. "I am sorry about all this, love," he said drowsily, having also been given a small amount of milk of the poppy for the pain. "The traitorspawn seemed demure and innocent; who could have thought she'd be walking around spreading the pox."

"It's always the innocent ones," Vira murmured back, finally feeling better for the first time in days. Through a combination of bracing potion, a soothing bath, milk of the poppy, and being snuggled up with Maekar, she didn't feel the pain. "She probably slept with that pirate Baelon Waters. Pirates always have it." Suddenly she realized, with a jolt, that he had called her love. What did it mean? Did he mean it? Sometimes men just used that word as a casual endearment, and Vira was sure she had too, but all of a sudden she felt she had to analyze the word and the context he had used it in and why he had said it. And it had made her feel warm and happy. She snuggled close, their legs firmly entwined, her head resting on his shoulder.

Lord Buckler had congratulated both of them on their upcoming nuptials at the feast, showing them the raven send far and wide by the king after noting their bewildered response. The master seemed cowed by the threat, but few men are brave enough to tell an inquisitor with a mercury stick shoved up his peehole anything other than what he wants to hear..

"So we are to be wed when we return to the capital," Maekar said. Vira detected a hint of sadness in his voice, and she could not tell if it was because he was to be wed to the woman who had given them the pox, or if for another reason. "I had hoped that a Lordship would prevent the King from micromanaging every detail of my life."

Vira had listened to Lord Buckler in shocked silence, and she was relatively quiet as they walked back to their chamber. She had not even guessed that the King was considering her for marriage to a trueborn Targaryen. Didn't King Maegor always call her "peasant" and demean her? How then could she be a fit consort for Rhaegar Targaryen, who was as aristocratic as they came? Vira did not yet understand enough of court intrigue to know that she was being used to insult Rhaegar. She wondered instead if she was being rewarded by the King.
But was it a reward she wanted? A month ago, Vira would have said yes with every fiber of her being. Vira had defined herself by her ambition, not so long ago. And yet now she was unaccountably annoyed and distressed at the idea of some other woman taking Maekar away from her. That poxy bitch Visenya! What if she lured Maekar into loving her? Why do you care? Vira asked herself. Aren't you and Maekar just having some fun? Was it just fun though? She was starting to feel possessive of him. She loved how he protected her, and how chivalrously he treated her, and talking to him for hours. It was wonderful, and deeply uncomfortable.
"I must offer my congratulations," Vira said in a strained voice, sounding anything but happy for him. At least it's not Rhaena, she comforted herself. Vira was jealous of Rhaena, for the love Maekar had borne her, though she was annoyed with herself for being jealous in the first place. "Maybe the King wouldn't have wed you to her if he had known she was the Clap Carrier."

"I should hope not," Maekar replied. "Though I cannot say the match pleases me. She was rather boring, and with no dowry or lands to speak of…" he trailed off drowsily for a moment.
"Do you know of her brother, Lord Rhaegar?" he asked hesitantly, forcing himself back awake. "His dragon was killed in Oldtown, and he fought valiantly on the ground afterwards, leading the foot back into the fight when they may have routed. However… He is the heir to Lord Aenar's line," he said. "The King loves him not."

They had slipped back into bed, spooning sleepily as they talked. Vira made him encircle her waist with an arm, her own arm nestled against his. She was pleased to hear Maekar describe Visenya as boring. "Yes, she seems like a vapid little thing," Vira said.
"I know nothing of him," Vira said. "Though I feel he will be a disappointment after you. Does he even have a dragon? Why would the King marry a common-born seed like me, who is as penniless as Visenya but far less well born, to Rhaegar Targaryen?"

Maekar did not know how to tell her that it was because the King did not see her as a threat, and that her common blood would further dilute the claim that Aenar's line had on the throne. WIth no lands or powerful relatives, she would win Rhaegar no support from the realm's nobility should he ever seek to conspire against the crown. "He does not have a dragon, and I doubt the King will give him leave to try and bond another. He will give you a manse in King's Landing, and a number of guardsmen, though their purpose will be to keep Rhaegar there rather than answer to him," Maekar replied. "It is not an advantageous marriage for you, nor will mine be for me. If the younger daughter is to marry Trajan, then it is certain that the older daughter goes to me for the same reason; so they never become a threat to Prince Aegon's heirs."
He shifted slightly and kissed her gently on the lips, placing his fingers under her chin to tilt her face up to his. "If I am to marry a woman who brings me no land or gold, it is too bad that it is not you," he added with a small chuckle. As the words left his lips, however, he realized with a start that he would prefer Vira by far. He enjoyed simply lying beside her, with her body nestled next to his, talking to her for hours. He had bristled jealously when first informed of her betrothal to Rhaegar, and had been surprised to feel such an emotion.

Vira found herself blushing a little. But to hide her rush of emotions, she said playfully, "I would be so much more fun than that boring Visenya. We'd just have adventures every day and your castle would fall into neglect and disrepair. Eventually I'd probably make you sell it so we could fly away from Westeros and buy an entire island for ourselves, which we could populate with extremely pretty people to be our farmers, fishermen and servants. Where would we go?" she said, with mock seriousness. Vira did not want to think of her impending marriage to a stranger, or Maekar's own. It was much more fun to play make-believe, and not confront her feelings.

"I think I should buy one of the Summer Isles," Maekar replied with a laugh. "They say winter never falls there, and people live in houses built into the trees and and eat off plates of gold. I have heard they have a peculiar way of worshiping their gods as well," he said, lightly tracing a figure-8 on her back with the tip of his finger. "It is said the bedroom is used instead of a temple, in the Summer Islands, and they honor their gods with the joining of bodies and giving of pleasure."

"That sounds like my kind of temple," Vira laughed, tingling pleasantly under his finger. If only she was well enough to take him in her arms and do what she fantasized of doing to him all the time, but she restrained herself. But she snuggled even closer. "A land where fucking is worship, and winter never comes, and nobody can tell you who to marry. Why didn't the Conqueror go there instead?"

"Not big enough I expect," Meakar replied with a smile. He continued to trace varying patterns on her lower back, his fingertips just barely brushing over her skin"I imagine he wanted a challenge as well as a kingdom, and what better way to call yourself a man than uniting a war-torn land under one banner? Yes, I should much prefer that to Darkheart; I had a sweet amber wine from the Summer Islands once, and it may as well have been the nectar of the gods. I could drink nothing else for the rest of my life, and be content, though I would be rather drunk for it is quite stronger than you would expect," he added with a laugh.
His left arm lay at side, though it twitched for he wanted to brush the stray dark strands back from her eyes and to take her hands from his chest and enclose them within his own. He'd had a difficult time re-learning to fight without his left hand, but it was the nights like this one when he felt most like a cripple, when all he wanted to do was touch Vira but did not want to disgust her with his wrinkly scarred stump.

"Seeing as I've seen you in your cups at Baelon's wedding, I can't imagine it would take much amber wine to get you going," she teased. She kissed him, and then turned around for them to spoon again, pulling his left arm around her as naturally and nonchalantly as if it were whole. She liked feeling his nose pressed in her hair, and she loved feeling his arm around her, even with the stump. Far from being repulsed by it, the sight of his stump made her feel tender. She caressed his stump gently, wiggling her butt against him (she couldn't help herself, though she knew they could not be more intimate).
"This will always be a mark of your bravery and chivalry," she said quietly, her gentle fingers still caressing his stump. "Visenya is lucky."

Maekar winced when she wiggled, the friction irritating his groin which was still sore from the barbaric operation the Maester had performed on him earlier that evening. He ignored the pain, however, pressing up against Vira, kissing the side of her neck softly. Her scent filled his nostrils and he sighed happily as she lay in his arms, his right arm partially under her and fingers intwined with hers. His left was draped over her, and at first he drew back when she began to caress the scars where his arm ended, but he relaxed under her gentle touch. At her words, his arms tightened around her. "I would not speak of her, Lady Vira," he said quietly, ignoring her comment about his arm. He did not agree, but he did not wish to seem self-pitying.
"It is you in my arms," he whispered in her ear as he squeezed her tightly, "and you I would choose to remain in them."

How strange it was lay in intimacy like this. Vira was accustomed to bedding men and leaving immediately when the act was done, but with Maekar she loved to cuddle and talk like this, almost as much as their pillow play.
Her heart was full, and her first instinct was to make a funny, flippant comment, to hide her emotion. Instead, she entwined their legs more tightly and squeezed his hand. "Then I will," she said in a quiet, tender voice, not trusting herself to say more.

Maekar was unnerved by the feelings he was developing for this woman who he had met less than a month ago. He knew deep down that he should not, and the speed with which he was falling for her was likely due to he hurtful words he had Rhaena had exchanged when they parted, but he could not deny the peace and comfort that he always felt when Vira was in his arms. He kissed her neck again, and then lowered his head to the pillow so that his face was pressed into her hair that was slightly damp from her bath. He was content to just lie beside her in silence, their bodies pressed together, taking comfort in each other's presence.

The next morning, they were treated again by the maester, and bathed again before they broke their fast on a crusty, warm loaf of oatbread, blackberry preserves, mint tea, soft-boiled eggs and bacon. They were left to eat upstairs, for Lord Buckler apparently desired to spend as little time with his exalted poxy guests as possible, but Vira liked it this way. It was cozy, breaking her fast with Maekar in private, and the food was a relief from what they had been eating in the forest.
"Maekar," she said, taking a sip of her tea. "I want to find out more about this betrothed of mine. I don't know anything about him, and that worries me. I don't like being led blind into the dark, into the hand of a man I don't know. I have some...birds in King's Landing, who sing songs in my ear sometimes. Should I ask them about Rhaegar Targaryen?"

Markar grinned, though he looked ridiculous with half a piece of bread in his mouth. He chewed thoughtfully and used a knife to scrape some of the jam on to another piece of bread, which was still warm out of the ovens. "It would not be unwise, I suppose. He is confined to the Red Keep without the presence of someone the King explicitly trusts, so unless you've any… birds, in the Keep itself, it might be difficult to track him," he replied.
"Even so, I doubt would be able to receive any information from them before we returned to the capital. Send a rider to King's Landing, perhaps, with your instructions and when you return they might give you what you want to know," he added, smiling gently at the end before he continued. "I can help you write a message if you like, if your birds can read."

Vira nodded thoughtfully as she ate the eggs and bacon, wondering who she could trust. It would have to be Ben, who was a manager of the royal mint in King's Landing, and who would know how to get in touch with her maid. She didn't quite trust Bella completely with such a task, not yet.
She washed down the bacon with more tea before replying. "Would you help me write it, then?" she said gratefully. "Come, let's go over to the writing desk. If you're done eating," she added. "We can wait if you aren't."

It took Maekar some time to finish, eating as he was with only one hand, though he refused any assistance stubbornly. When he was finished, he walked over and joined Vira at the table. They'd only been working on her letters for a fortnight, but she was remarkably intelligent grasped the concepts quickly, though she still struggled with words that were not spelled as they were pronounced.
She sat down in the chair at the desk, with a parchment and quill and inkwell, and he stood behind her, running the tips of his fingers lightly over the skin of her shoulder. "First, think about want to say," he said.

OOC: Sorry I didn't see you sign out of chat, my sound was off!
She winked up at him. "I somehow think better when I'm sitting in your lap," she purred. And so she got up, gently eased Maekar into the chair, and then settled herself on his lap, without putting undue pressure on his groin because of his surgery.
Perched on Maekar's lap, she nibbled the quill and thought. "I think I want to say: Tell Yara to befriend or seduce Rhaegar's manservant, and offer him coin for all information on Rhaegar's comings, goings, and who he associates with. Does that cover it?"

"That seems enough," Maekar replied, carefully balancing her. He wrapped his left arm around her waist to steady her. "Do you remember our lessons in the Keep? 'Tell Yara…'" he trailed off, watching as she carefully formed the letters, gently correcting any mistakes. He whispered encouragements as they worked, and nibbled on her ear playfully.

It took some time, and several times Maekar had to scratch out her words and make her start again, so there ended up a small pile of crumpled up parchment in one corner of the table. Vira found it taxing and at time frustrating, but also a fun challenge. Maekar's kisses on her neck and ear helped sweeten it too.
When she had sealed the letter with hot wax, she suddenly paused as an idea came to her. "Oooh."
