Aerion invites the Red Keep's new Red Priestess to his chambers. He'd recently read a short tome dedicated to the foreign religion which he'd found in his deceased brother's bedroom. He reread the tome as he waited, intrigued by its mystic promises.

Aerion answered the door. "Lady Sarena. Please, come in. May I offer you a drink?"

Sarena entered and paused, then offered a smile to Strongdragon. "My lord, thank you for your invite. Wine, if you please."

Silently, Aerion poured for the priestess a sweet wine from the Reach and for himself only water. "I thank you for coming. It's not every lady that will visit the chambers of a man she's never met before." He extended her the wine cup but was unsure if he should be more vocal with his offer.

"Is that so, my lord? Why is that? Forgive me, I am unfamiliar with Westerosi customs." Sarena sipped at the wine.

He shrugged. "I don't know, that's just how it is. But please, have a seat by the fire. It is oddly cool tonight, strange for the season."

"I try not to dwell on things too much either," she said, with a quirk of her lips.
She took a seat by the the fire. "It is cool, though I mind it not. I find I am always warm."

Aerion weighed the blind woman's words carefully, unsure of their true meaning. He sat opposite her and leaned forward, his arms rested on his knees.
"To be fair my lady, I did not ask you hear to discuss the weather, I have... questions."

She leaned forward also, in a half conspiratorial manner. "No, my lord? Then do relieve my suspense."

He sat a moment, thinking of what exactly he wanted to know. "Your... Lord of Light. Why do you worship him?"

"Because the night is dark and full of terrors," she replied simply.

His lips tightened, unsatisfied. "Yes, yes. I read all that. But what power does your Red God wield that protects you from the terrors of this world?"

"You are well read, my lord, there a few books written in your tongue that would make mention of the Lord of Light, and fewer still that wouldn't be mostly fabrications and fanciful exaggerations."
"He wields many powers" she said, answering his question, "powers of fire and shadow and life. Is that what interests you, my lord? His powers? Would you like to wield fires like a sword in your hand? Would you to see the dead breath again because you deigned it so? Would you like to know the plots of your enemies before even they do?" Her white eyes glittered in the firelight as she spoke to the lord.

A faint, mysterious smile crossed her lips. "Wanting is not enough, what are you prepared to give for it?"

Aerion swallowed. The Gods have ever ignored me. Perhaps this Red God shall be different.
"All that I can and all that I am. Assuming this Lord of Light is as you say."

"I did not ask what you were hoping for. You said you would give everything, all you are. Would you give your life? Would you cut open your wrists and feed your lifeblood to the flames here in your chambers? Or did you not truly mean 'everything'?"

Aerion sneered. "Is this some kind of trick? If I say yes, will you see me dead on the floor? An unexceptional end for a Targaryen to meet." His voice was coated in malice.
"Well I am no ordinary man. Aye, I would give my life for your Lord, if he gives me what I desire in return."

"Well I am no ordinary man. Aye, I would give my life for your Lord, if he gives me what I desire in return." She let out a short cackle of laughter "Your fire is weak, Lord Aerion Strongdragon, but devotion is the fuel that can feed it and make it roar brightly. Your desires are petty and ignoble, but you would not be the first person to follow R'hllor for such reasons. Your words ring hollow, but I can make you honest and true." She produced a dagger from her robes and offered it to him. "Prick you finger and drop the blood into the fire, swearing loyalty to R'hllor and disavowing the false Seven gods of the Andals and the selfish Valyrian pantheon. From there, mayhaps the Lord of Light will find use for you, alive I have no doubt."

Although her words cut, he could feel the truth behind them. Aerion had not been his fierce self ever since Baelor's death. A broken man may rebuild himself. But he would not allow the words of the priestess to cow him. He accepted the dagger with both hands and stood. As he approached the fireplace, he could feel the heat biting at him. Rather than shunning the flames, Aerion allowed their warmth to reassure him of his purpose. He raised the blade to his palm and slashed downwards. As the blood trickled from the fresh wound he curled his fist and it began to fall in congealed tears.
"I, Aerion of House Targaryen," he spoke, "son of Jahaerys, do so vow on my honour, my life and my family, to swear undying loyalty to R'hllor, forsaking the false Seven gods of the Andals and the dead Gods of Old Valyria. For so long as I serve the Lord of Light, may he watch over and guide me, for the night is dark and full of terrors."
He opened his palm, now bathed a dark color of red.
Fire and Blood, he thought.

"For the night is dark and full of terrors," she agreed. "These were good words and well spoken, R'hllor has heard them. He will no doubt be pleased with your loyalty."
"The fire," she said, gesturing to the fireplace, "is your connection to Lord of Light. It is his ever-lasting gift to us, and so long as even an ember still burns in this world, hope is not lost. Pray, meditate, think with the fire. Feel it's power, feel it's connection to the fire within you. When you understand what I'm saying, return to me and we will speak further."
She rose.

"My lady," he inclined his head and escorted her out.
