"A dragon need never apologize." he assured her. "Especially one forced by fate into such a lot."
"The only silly notion is that you do not think yourself a genuine one already." Willem replied. "You have always kept your eyes and ears open. Asking for anything more would be subjecting you to a danger I could not bear. You deal with far too much of that already."

Elsey smiled gently at him;
"You have always been so kind to me, I appreciate it, especially now. When I came back from Oldtown, I thought that losing my dragon was the worst thing that could possibly happen to me. I was very wrong indeed."
She looked out of the window for a moment, then back to him;
"Why is it that you have always been good to me, Willem? It has been the case as long as I can remember, long before my father died, so it cannot be mere pity."

"You had a kind heart." Darklyn replied simply. "It is a rare and precious thing in this kingdom, moreso in the royal house. Such light bust be fostered if it is to persevere, rather than smothered or snuffed out."

"Thank you. I hope you do not think I question your motives, I do not. I have just been finding it hard to understand why I deserve your kindness, when so few others see fit to give it, especially when it has been risky for you. It means a lot to me. You see, recently, I have been so close to being... snuffed out, as you say. I don't want to make assumptions, so I would ask how much you know of what has transpired around me since I returned?"

"Everyone deserves a bit of kindness...even those that give none." he replied enigmatically. "I would assume I know everything and hope you surprise me."

"If they were, they would not be nice surprises," Elseyris replied, her eyes downcast.
"Does even Trajan deserve kindness? Even though he beats me, humiliates me, and threatens to cut off parts of my body if I do not do what he wants?"

"The little I could unearth about the life Trajan was subjected to before taming Zyraxes would turn your stomach." Willem replied, with a look of genuine pity. "He was not a monster born, but made."
"For that reason he deserves kindness and even pity." he said with conviction. "However note that these are not the same things as forgiveness or mercy."

"I tried to be kind to him once, but it was difficult, and only seemed to make him angry. I think I worded it incorrectly," said Elseyris, pensively.
"At least he is away, for a time. There is some respite to be had. Ser Bryan does not frighten me, and at least stays on the other side of the door sometimes. I'm not sure to whom precisely he reports though, nor the guards and servants at the manse. I have learned much from you, but it is still hard to feel confident of a private conversation, or to know who can be trusted. I don't suppose you can offer some guidance?" she asked, with an earnest look.

"I am not sure if he isn't beyond the reach of kindness at this point. When you beat a dog for too long it goes feral." he remarked. "Your guards report to His Grace, of course."

"Is there a way out of this?" Elseyris asked, her expression sorrowful, and not without fear. "I had long thought that I feared neither death nor pain, but now... I find myself dreading every day that he might come back..."
She fought down the lump in her throat at feeling so weak and helpless;
"...and those I love and value might not."

"There is no escape...not for any of us." Willem replied. "There is nowhere a dragon's wings cannot reach and little His Grace does not see."
"We all make due with the shackles that bind us."

"Tell me of yours," Elseyris requested, her voice quiet and sad, her hand reaching out to hold his wrist, as though assuaging an imaginary binding. "Please know that I am not asking these questions out of frivolity. There are some things I want to understand."

"My service is my shackles." Willem confided. "To be in a position where morality is a liability, and worse, to be talented at it. It haunts me and will until the day the Stranger takes me."

Elsey nodded slowly in understanding, still holding Willem's wrist comfortingly.
"You are a good man, Willem, I know it," she said, softly. And I can count the number of good men I know on one hand. If it helps anything, I trust you, regardless of your position."
She gave a little smile;
"And you can trust me, if ever you want an ear that will appreciate your morality. As I have said before, I would like to help my friends with their burdens."

"A man must see to his own burdens." he replied, though with a smile of gratitude. "Besides, you have enough of your own as it is."

"As you say," Elsey nodded, slowly releasing his hand. "That is wise, I should probably do the same. Perhaps I would be in a better state today if I had been more like you."
She looked at him with a respect and admiration that used to be reserved only for her father.

"None should aspire to emulate a man that remained silent during such times." Darklyn replied. "Best get going now, my dear. I have much to do."

Elsey looked at him sadly, getting up to leave, but giving him a last small embrace;
"Alright, Willem. I am sorry if I have impinged overly on your time."

"Nonsense." he replied with a smile. "There are few ways I would rather spend my time, but the shackles of duty call."
