Ser Maekar moves through Oldtown with a pair of his own household knights following him. He is dressed simply, with a black eyepatch over his empty right eye, though his left arm is still bandaged and in a sling. He wears a dusty brown cloak over his clothes, and Vigiliance hangs at his side. He makes his way quietly into the Artisans' Quarter, seeking a worker of bone or wood, of somewhat shady repute.

He has to go to the far end of the district, getting closer to the slums, before he finds a place that might help. There are no bone workers and none of the carpenters seem to be quite what he's looking for. Maekar is on the brink of giving up when he sees a small smithy. The sign is old and dingy but the symbol display a smith's hammer. Maekar recalls his lessons telling him that dragonbone has a high content of iron.

Maekar orders his two men to wait outside the shop's door, and he ducks inside, looking for the owner.

Inside he is met by a young man who has the look of an apprentice, who bids him wait for the master smith. The smith turns out to be a burly man who doesn't look at all shady. He is simply dressed and wears a smith's apron.
"Greetings, m'lord. How can I be of service?"

Maekar frowns, looking the man over. "Indeed, goodman, I hope you can," he replied. He drew a small piece of dragonbone about four inches long and two inches in diameter from a pouch at his belt; it had come from the tip of one of Azuria's wings, as it was known that the wing-bones were the easiest to work into hilts, already being roughly the proper shape.
"I wish to know if you've the skill to work with dragonbone; I've a few works I wish to comission," he added.

His eyes widened. "I did some work on a dragon in the past," he admitted. "There was that dragon slain in Oldtown, some years ago. i am certainly willing to try."
He handled the bone delicately, turning it over.
"What is it that you wish for?"

Maekar had judged the piece about the right size for a dagger hilt, although he was no expert so he could not be sure. "Four things; of that I wish a dagger hilt to be made," he said, lifting the weapon out of his belt and handing it to the smith. It was a beautiful dagger with the blueish tint that indicated it was castle-forged of extremely high quality, and it curved backward at the last inch, though both eges were sharpened. "Nothing complicated or ornamental, just the hilt. I've a larger piece back in my pavilion, of which I wish a new hilt to be made for Vigiliance," he added, indicating the sword at his hip. "The third item is a longbow, perhaps five and a half feet. For a woman, about this size," he said, indicating a person who was about 5'4" with his hand. "I do not know if that is within your craft, but if you are unable to make one then perhaps you might direct me to a bowyer who can?"
"The fourth thing I will require is your discretion, and your silence, though you will be paid well for each.

"The hilts are easy enough. I am not accustomed to producing longbows, of course, since they are more commonly made of wood, but I have a friend who can do the job for you. We master craftsmen help one another in Oldtown. Leave the bone with me and I will see that it is done."

"You have experience working with dragonbone then? It can't be commonly found, after all, and I imagine that only a portion of Quicksilver's bones would have been salvagable, since he was shot out of the sky and hit the ground from several hundred feet in the air," he replied. "I imagine it must be imported from the east, if you're to have any practice working with it?"

"I've only a little experience. Don't get much call to work with dragonbone. I never asked where the bone came from," he said. "Best not to, in this business." He tapped his nose and winked. "Could have been the east, to be sure. There's always trade though, and not every tradesman wants to pay the harbour taxes. Aye, and some of them wanted to trade with Lannisport or Kings Landing even though the city was ruled by the Dragonbane. So they had to get...creative with their methods." He winked again/

"Even smugglers have their purpose in this world," Maekar admitted quietly, "though perhaps it wiser to speak of such things less openly. I will see you well rewarded, however, if you direct me to one of your further ranging... friends. It must be a merchant whose business is at sea, with ships of his own."

The smith nodded. "Could try the Lady Serenei. If she's not in harbour, go to the Golden Goat tavern and they'll take a message for the master, for when he returns."

Maekar nodded. He handed over the piece of Dragonbone he'd brought. "I will send a boy this afternoon, to bring you the other two pieces, and if you send me a message when the hilt is ready, I will return when you fit it to Vigiliance," he replied. "As for the bow, I wish it to be of the highest quality that your bowyer friend can make, something fit for a Queen."
After he agreed on payment, and paid the smith a portion up front, he left the smithy and headed toward the harbor. Along the way, he stopped in a few pot-shops and taverns, unobtrusively asking around about the ship to try and confirm the Blacksmith's information, that it was a merchant vessel that often made trips to the east carrying exports. If he finds that the information was reliable, he will head down to the docks and seek out the ship's owner personally.

OOC = coin flip for the ship. Heads=success!
Maekar is in luck. After making several enquiries he learns that the Lady Serenei is in dock. He also learns that the master is of Myrish origin.
The ship is long and elegant, as far as that is possible for a ship, with sails of bright yellow silk. The figurehead is of a lady in a long robe, elegant and graceful. When Maekar approaches, the men call down to him in the Myrish tongue but he is able to make one, who understands the Common Tongue a little better than the oters, comprehend his wishes and he ends up being shown into a luxurious cabin filled with elegant furniture, silks and velvets.
The master of the ship wears a velvet doublet and his shirts are ruffled at the sleeves. He smiles very politely at Maekar.
"How can I be helping, my lord?"

"I understand you are a merchant of wide repute, goodman," Maekar said politely, with a smile. "I perhaps wished to discuss a matter of trade with you, if you are amenable."

"Speak, my lord," said the master. "I will hear you out, at least. I am always interested in lucrative deals."
He spoke the Common Tongue fairly well, though with a heavy accent.

"I imagine you deal in rarer and more valuable goods? For example, dragonbone; I imagine there is little enough market for it here, but perhaps in the east it is more widely sought," he said. He did not need to add that the more sought-after an item was, the more the person who owned it could charge for access.

"It is extremely rare, indeed." The merchant smiled. "Dragonbone is highly prized when there are so few dragons in the world. I once sold the bones of a dragon who died before the Doom of Valyria. Let us say it fetched a price the likes of which you cannot imagine. I built the most magnificent house with the profits." He smirked. "I understand several dragons died in the battle?"

"I think you'll find I can imagine quite a lot. I have come into possession of a fair amount of the material in the wake of the battle," he replied knowingly, "and I am seeking a buyer."
He told the man his estimates in weight for the amount of bone he had packed away in his pavilions. The dragons' skulls had already been shipped back to King's Landing, but the rest of the skeletons he had kept and weighed. Azuria's bones themselves weighed over three hundred pounds easily, and Nenyan's bones still weighed more than a man despite being so much smaller than the other deceased dragon.

"Of course. And who might you be? I do not wish to find the king sending men after me when I am selling the product in good faith."

"Well once you are out of port, I cannot imagine you should have anything to worry about," Maekar replied smoothly. "I understood that discretion was one of your selling points, and I think it is perhaps safer to go unnamed as yet, though if you like you may call me Markus. The margins of profit you can expect are surely high enough to outweigh the risk involved."

"Perhaps that is so. I am happy to negotiate with you."
He named a price, lower than Maekar would have liked, though still substantial.

"For such a weight, you must think me a child," he replied, in an affronted tone. He was clearly not actually insulted, but all haggling requires a certain level of drama and showiness, and Maekar intended to get the best price possible for such a sale. "Increase that by half again, and we have a deal."

"Half! You will rob me and see my wife and children starve! A tenth more." But it was clear that he enjoyed the bartering process.

"Hah! My liegelord would flay me alive, if I accepted such a poor return on his behalf!" he replied with a small chuckle. "The original offer, plus a third."
