Aegon had thought that she had made that clear before the battle. Though that thought meant that he was suddenly unclear on what she did mean now. Aegon's greatest strength had never been interpreting women.
"I understand," Aegon answered, not sure that he did. He clasped her hand in both of his. "You should rest and regain your strength."

"I will," she replied, uncertain of whether she had expressed herself correctly or not. She used the fingertips of her clasped hand to gently stroke his wrist;
"May I kiss you?"

Aegon kissed her forehead. His expression was troubled. "I have to finish this war, Elsey. And... sort my thoughts. Will you wait for my answer?"

Her expression was disappointed and confused, but she nodded slowly;
"I understand. I will. I am sorry, I did not mean to make you uncomfortable. Please, stay safe."

//////////////
After Aegon had left for the Arbor, his younger sister, Princess Rhaena, came to visit. She gave the courtesy of a knock but otherwise walked straight in. Sh felt odd, not being in someone else's tent, but because for the first time since leaving King's Landing, she was wearing a dress, a purple dress, with a silver trim, that brought out her eyes. Her hair rather than being up in it's usual braid, was flowing freely down her back, down to her waist. She looked almost like a princess should, except for the sword at her side and the bow across her back.
"Elseyris," She said, almost as if she were inviting her into her own tent, rather than in greeting, "I trust you are able to see me,"

When Rhaena strode in, she snapped back into full consciousness, setting the book hurriedly aside, pulling herself up out of her chair with a wince, to offer an awkward curtsy; "Princess, to what do I owe the honour of a visit?"

"I suppose it is, isn't it," she said, mostly to herself, she either did not notice the wince, or did not care, "I need a reason?" She asked, raising an eyebrow and looking at Elseyris with her deep violet eyes, true Targaryen eyes, "You know, I am not sure you and I have ever spoken before."

"You may," she said, and looked off to the side for a moment, as if something had distracted her, before speaking again and looking back at the other girl, "You volunteered to second your father, did you not?" She asked, after her quiet moment.

Elsey opened her travelling chest, drawing out a mostly full bottle of dark Stormlands red, and filled two cups, placing them and the bottle on the table between them.
"Yes, I did," she said, with a small, nervous chuckle. "That seems like so long ago, I feel foolish to think of it. I didn't even really know what was going on. I was only eleven, it was frightening to see such hostility. On reflection, perhaps I thought that my father would not fight if he knew my life was at stake too, but, well, that was clearly not the case."
Her smile fell as she finished speaking, her mind cast back to that day of feeling so desperate and helpless, of knowing that her father had put his drunken pride before his family, and how much that hurt to think about.

"You think your father was a coward then?" She asked, looking incredulous, "that your father would not fight if your life was at stake. Your life would have only been in danger, should he have refused to fight, well, at that moment." Rhaena said, with a chuckle, like it was a joke. "It is very fortunate that you are so much older and wiser now. And I said you may offer me some, not that I would have any,"
She did not reach for the glass, "What gods do you follow?"

He rose to go. She watched him leave, then put her face in her hand, fighting back the tears that were welling up, unbidden.

"No, that's not what I meant. I didn't understand how things were back then." At realising her presumption about the wine, she grew even more flustered; "I am sorry, Princess, I had thought the offer was implicit in the asking. My apologies, I am no courtier, I am clumsy in these matters. Please forgive me." She took a big gulp from her own cup, trying to calm herself. She sensed a trap in Rhaena's question about Gods, but didn't want to lie. "I follow the Seven, Your Grace."

"Do you not live at court?" She asked, "I have barely been back to the capital since I came away from it over two years ago, you are more courtier than I" she continued, narrowing her eyes when the seven were mentioned, "that is a pity, you really have little going for you, do you? No real faith, no courtly skills, no trust and no dragon." She said, finally taking the wine and taking a sip toasting her, "good luck."

"Living in a vipers' nest does not make one a snake," Elsey replied. "As for the rest, I do not care much for the insincerity of courtly games, my dragon was killed fighting bravely against Ser Hector, and I have all the trust that truly matters to me. I prayed to the Seven that we would win the battle, end the war, and that those dear to me would be safe. My prayers have been answered. That is all I want 'going for me'."
She tried to suppress her annoyance at being prodded at, but royalty or not, she wasn't going to take being walked on.

"I doubt anything but a snake lasts long in a nest of them, especially when it's trapped there" she said, looking sideways at the traitors daughter, " other creatures ought be careful they don't rustle too much, make too much noise, lest you disrupt them, because then you would be in trouble when the whole nest comes down around you, no?" She replied, thinking the metaphor appropriate herself.
"No one is answering your prayers, are yours more sincere than the prayers of all those men that died, on either side? I bet they prayed too for all the good it did them, if you lived it was skill, or dumb luck the same as those that you love. They either do not exist, or they do not care." She said, smiling, "oh but look, my well meaning friendly chat has turned so very sour."

"Well, if the Gods do not exist, or do not care, there is little point in judging either way. As for friendly conversation, even one with little courtly skill knows that no-one asks questions on such a divisive issue in the name of friendliness. That is alright though, there is no sourness on my part, I assure you. I am used to being around those who disdain me out of hand. If some people choose to only see one facet of me, then that is their problem, not mine."
She sipped her wine again;
"Even the fiercest viper knows that some animals eat snakes."

"You should watch your tongue, before you can do nothing but watch me cut it out," Rhaena said, pleasantly, "And while some animals may eat snakes... tiny little mice," she looked pointedly over the top of her wine goblet "are always the prey. I do not find religion divisive, unless it divides us into wrong and right, and if I judged ever simpering, faith-serving simpleton on that alone, well I'd not think much of a great many people."
"I am trying to decide something though..."

Elsey couldn't help but smile a little at the veiled threat.
I am no mouse.
"You must not think much of the Crown Prince then," she said, watching her wine swirl in the cup, electing not to ask what Rhaena was trying to decide.

"Actually I do not, there is no accounting for his taste either, in gods, in dragons... in women," she said, smiling, "I mean did he actually fuck you in here, or did he allow you the honour of his own tent? This is somewhat dingy."

Elsey met the latest dig with a sweet smile, ignoring her question entirely;
"I am sorry that my lodgings displeases you, Princess. When I left King's Landing, I was under the impression we were going to war, not a pampering party."

"Yes, you've only been away from the comfort of the capital for such a short time, you probably do not appreciate it. Coming with Aegon at the last possible moment," she said pleasantly enough, thinking her question more or less answered anyway, in her own mind at least, if they had not, there would be no harm in saying they had not. "You have no doubt had your fill of pampering, must make a pleasant change to be living rough for a time. Why are you here anyway?"

"So I am to be condemned for not having been in the war from the start, am I? By all means find as many absurd faults with me as you can, it takes none of my energy. I am here because I was asked by the Prince to fight for Oldtown, and, as a loyal subject of the Realm, I obeyed. It is laughable for a Princess to accuse me of being pampered. Why are you here, when you clearly do not wish to have anything resembling a friendly discourse, but merely wish to sling coarse quips at me?"

"I never said I had condemned you, none of us have been in the war since it started, not even the King and Queen, and of course, it is very good of you to come, all the good it will do you."I am trying to be friendly, but if you continue to take offense at everything I say then we cannot possibly have a friendly conversation, I never called you pampered, I believe it was you who accused me of such, when I have been here, in the mud and the dirt, doing my share of the watches and scouting and the less than savoury duties, while you sit in my father's castle, drinking his wine and eating his food."
She kept the smile on her face the whole time that she spoke, but quick as a flash the face fell into one of terrible rage, her pent up annoyance at this upstart giving her lip the entire conversation, she took a step forward and darted her hand out, trying to close it around Elseyris' throat, while pushing her back against the pillar in the centre of the tent, keeping it up at the top, aware of her wounds, her anger bubbling over in a awesome wave as she went on the offensive, losing control of it.
