Elseyris nodded, then turned to look around the main hall for a septon, indicating for one of the knights to follow her. A few knights were at the other side of the hall, keeping watch over a few huddled septons, and she made her way to them quickly, though the limp still showing in her stride.
"Sers, Prince has asked to speak with one of the septons, get that one to his feet."
She and the knight she brought flanked the septon, walking him to the chamber door and holding it open for him.
"In you go, septon."

Aegon waited as the man was brought forth. Once he was before him, Aegon fixed him in his gaze. "Who is this man?" Aegon pointed to the High Septon.

The septon was young, brown hair in a bowl cut and face stained with tears. From the smell as he entered, it did not take much to deduce the man had pissed himself when the Starry Sept was breached.
"That is his High Holiness." he sniveled, looking up at Aegon with eyes that beseeched mercy.

"For... for how long?" Aegon asked, knowing the answer already.

"Almost half a century, milord." the young septon replied.

"Go," Aegon said. He shut the door behind the young septon. It took Aegon a long time to turn around, almost as if the slowness of his motion might put a stop to his inevitable duty. This man threw the realm into bloody civil war, Aegon told himself, Few have ever been responsible for more deaths. But whatever the High Septon had once been, he was harmless now -- an old and done man, trapped in an era in his mind before he had hated so fiercely.
Aegon knelt before the septon. The dagger on his belt had never felt so heavy. "Septon Nathaniel," Aegon said haltingly. "Do you believe that a man might still find heaven, even when he has sinned?"

"Of course, my child." the High Septon replied with absolute certainty, placing a shriveled hand comfortingly on Aegon's shoulder. "The path to heaven begins in hell, Prince Aenys."

Aegon rose raggedly, burying the blade of his dagger in the old man's heart. He clutched the septon with his other hand, holding him tight. "I hope we both find it," Aegon whispered. "I pray that we do." He held the old septon until he breathed his last.

The men enjoyed a morbid embrace as the old man slumped against the Crown Prince, eyes full of confusion and fear.
"Take care of my son..." he pleaded, his last breath a weak gasp.
Aegon heard the door close behind him as Trajan departed, apparently off to cross the next name off his list.

Aegon laid the High Septon gently down on his soft bed. He slumped down on the ground, leaning his back against the foot of the four-post bed. He deserved to die, Aegon told himself. He brought it upon himself. But Aegon could not bring to mind the hate-filled old demagogue he had imagined on the road to Oldtown, only the kindly, doddering septon too infirm to understand the world around him. With another sudden pang, he recalled Hector's final words. He had thought the man nothing but an awful fanatic, but with his death he felt a sudden, unwanted kinship. Could it be he was just like Aegon, another son fighting his father's war?
Aegon buried his head in his hands. After a while, he stood back up. There was still duty to be fulfilled. His men would look to him for guidance. Aegon composed his features, and if he looked cold and drawn and grim it was better than the alternative. He opened the door and looked at Elsey. For a moment he thought his emotions would overtake him again, but he fought it down coldly and savagely. "We go to the Hightower," Aegon said flatly.

The look on Aegon's face was eerily cold and fixed, and it made Elsey wonder what terrible exchange had been had. She dared not look into the room, but kept her eyes on Aegon as he spoke.
She nodded slowly, her face sombre;
"I fear I am too wounded to fight, My Prince," she said, sadly. "I would gladly follow, but I think am more likely to be a hindrance. What would you have me do?"
She dearly wished to take his hand, to embrace him, to say something comforting, but the presence of everyone else, and her own feelings of powerlessness to help, left her merely standing still and quiet.

Aegon looked at Elseyris again, once more feeling awful. She was seriously wounded, and she had lost her dragon, yet he had only thought about his own emotions. He wrapped his arms around her, trying not to hurt her wounded arm. "I am sorry," he said softly, "About Nenyan. If I had been a better commander..."

Although the sudden embrace surprised Elsey, she accepted it gladly, wrapping her 'good' arm around him in return and closing her eyes. Holding him close was a great comfort, despite everything. She had fought like hell for it, and, for a few moments, she forgot the pain she was in, and all the devastation around them.
"There is nothing you should apologise to me for. His death was my fault, not yours. I am so very proud of you..."
She trailed off, holding herself back from being overly familiar in front of everyone, and feeling herself welling up with tears again at speaking of Nenyan.
"We can talk later. For now, there are still tasks at hand. Just tell me what you want me to do, and it will be done."

Aegon nodded once, shortly. It was a curt gesture, perhaps a form of self-restraint to keep him from saying something else. "Have your wounds attended to," Aegon said. "Take what knights you need as an escort. Let them know it is on my orders." Aegon reluctantly stepped away from Elseyris, then looked around the devastated sept one last time. He walked out.

Elseyris stood a few moments in silence, watching him go, with renewed light in her heart. Eventually, she gathered a small contingent of guards to return her to the camp.

Upon the fall of Starry Sept, Rhaegar Targaryen at the head of his heavy infantry left for the Hightower.
