Appearance:
Janos has Long Silver hair and Purple eyes, he is about 5 ft 10 and relatively slim. He stays clean shaved and keeps his attire fairly simple. He is physically able, but is not particularly impressive, as he does not spend any more time training with a sword than necessary.
Personality:
By appearances Janos comes across as very unsuited to the Game of Thrones. He is well mannered, seemingly quite loyal to the King, and appears to be either of an impressive self control, or quite lacking in Vices. However while all of these may be otherwise explained, he most notably seems to be lacking in ambition, and shows no interest in the Game of Thrones.
He does not spend much downtime, but the small amount of downtime he does give himself is spent either socially with others in the Red Keep, or with his Dragon.
At a guess, his appointment as hand seems to have been favour from the King for something, as no other explanation seems to fit.
Background:
Janos Velaryon was born in 42 AL on Driftmark, the second son of Aurane and Rhaena Velaryon. He appeared to be a relatively normal child until the age of 9. At the age of 9 it was discovered that someone had been taking decent sums of money from the house treasury. The investigation soon identified that one of the servants was responsible. It was soon after this that the servant was found drowned at the shore and the only witness was the shocked Janos, whose wrist had been broken during whatever events had occurred there. While the seemingly shocked Janos was in no condition to explain what had happened, Aurane rounded up any possible people until Janos identified one. The man in question made up a story that Janos had got him involved, which Aurane dismissed, taking insult at the accusation.
This event seemed to be just the opening of Pandora’s box, as for the next 6 years Janos was repeatedly manipulated into serving some person scheme, until when he was 15 Lord Aurane had him sent away to kings landing, hoping that he would be more suited to court life and that the incidents on Dragonstone would not be repeated.
In Kings landing while seemingly nonexistent, Janos did seem to fit in, and the incidents from Driftmark were never heard of in Kings landing. While at home in Kings landing, Janos did very little, spending most of his time reading up on whatever book had caught his interest. This lasted for a month until a bastard from the North whom he had become acquainted with began trying to convince him that they should go on a hunting trip. While at first he said no, and continued with how he had been acting before, after a month of pestering he finally gave up, deciding that going along was easier than trying to wait out the bastard.
So the two of them set out into the Kingswood with a few other off duty guards, servants, and a Bastard from the Eyrie. Once in the Kingswood they took about 2 days to find the trail of an animal, and then they spent another 2 following it, in which time they became totally lost. Soon after they lost any sense of where they were they also lost the animal they were tracking. So there was maybe 8 men, none specialist survivors, lost somewhere in the Kingswood, but with no idea as to where. They wandered, trying to find their way for about a day until they were ambushed by bandits. In the chaos all but Janos and one of the guards were killed, with the Guard getting several broken ribs from a mace strike and Janos a broken ankle and odd cuts all over. While Janos wasn’t talking, based on his appearance the bandits guessed he was of some importance, and so had decided the Faith Militant or someone on the Targaryan side might pay for Janos. So while the guard was left to either find his own way, or die, Janos had a sack tossed over his head, his hands bound, and was made to follow behind the bandits on foot.
While Janos could not say exactly how long he had been marching, by the time they first stopped his throat was parched, and his ankle felt like it had been a light snack for a dragon hatchling, so he would guess some time. They took one stop for the night before setting off again in the morning, at which stage Janos could barely walk. When the group turned a corner then suddenly stopped and became silent, Janos fell to the ground confused. He was about to make a noise when he heard the bandits were trying to bolt, at which stage out of confusion he guessed there was something to run from. When the heat came he was far enough out of the way that it did not light him on fire, but it still burnt him on the arm, and made him trip once again, further hurting his ankle. As he tried to block out the pain of his ankle and the burns he heard the sound of the less fortunate bandits screaming in pain, felt the occasional gust of heat, and worst of all smelt the burnt flesh. Once events had calmed down he, in spite of the pain, set to trying to get the bindings off.
It took him about 20 minutes to get them off, and once the sack was off his head he saw a chilling sight. The ground where most of the bandits had been was now replaced by burnt flesh, scorched ground, and blood, and about 5 meters ahead of it was a now sleeping, large black Dragon whom the bandits had woken up before. At this stage others would have tried to limp away, hoping they would be lucky and stumble upon life. However, likely thinking that even if it went wrong death by Dragon is better than death by thirst; Janos slowly approached the dragon, waking it. At which point Janos got a look that said, any closer and you’re dead. So Janos backed off and waited for it to calm down before trying again. This lasted for the next 7 hours, and he did seem to be making a small bit of progress, however by this time he was severely dehydrated, and had a fever. The next morning he resumed his attempts, and by the end of the second day the still inactive Dragon was willing to use his wing to shelter Janos from the elements. On the third morning he tried climbing onto the Dragons back, at this stage hoping that he would just get a quick end. However as he settled and waited for the end, it did not come. While the Dragon was definitely awake, for some reason it had not taken offence at the young man on its back. It took Janos another hour of trying to figure out what to do before the Dragon took off of its own accord, frightening Janos almost out of his mind.
Once he had recovered after returning to Kings landing Janos had named the dragon Caligo, in absence of another name for it. 3 months after he arrived in Kings landing the first time he left (year 57 AL) with Caligo, taking a couple of years to travel around Westeros on Caligo.
This ended in 59 AL, when he arrived in Kings landing to join his father’s forces as they travelled south under Gaemon Targaryen for the 2 year Stormlands campaign against the Faith Militant. During the Campaign his role seemed surprisingly small, as due to his lack of military Knowledge he was usually scouting atop Caligo, or providing support in battles. After the Campaign he returned to Kings landing with Caligo, and for the next 16 years he very rarely left the city, only leaving on the odd minor naval endeavour, or when he wished to escape for a time and Ride Caligo. It was sometime within the first 5 years of this period in which he came to be something of a political ally to Maegor and Rhaella Targaryan, although exactly how and when is uncertain.
Beyond some minor military assistance it is anyone’s guess what Janos was doing for most of those 16 years, though he did appear relatively busy. Shortly after Maegor 2 took the throne Janos was granted the position of Hand of the King, an event that surprised everyone. In lack of any other obvious reasons, many people assumed it was due to association and support, or some other show of favour, although that is only due to a lack of other visible reasons and would be odd to say the least.
He has served as hand quite well, though he at times seems to be little more than a loyal hound to Maegor.
Name: Caligo
Byname: The Silent
Gender: Male
Rider: Janos Velaryon
Age: 78 (Esteemed)
Parentage: Unknown
Appearance:
Caligo is quite large at the age of 78, and is coloured Matte black. He has eyes of crimson Red, but other than that his colour is so near monotone that when he curls up it can be almost impossible to identify parts of him, and due to his non reflective scales, in the Dark despite his colossal size he can be hard to spot when up in the air.
Temperament:
Caligo is somewhat odd to say the least, he is almost completely silent, for a massive Dragon at least, in that he never makes noises himself, no growling, no roaring in battle, and even on the odd case when he is hurt he remains silent. Most of the time he is inactive, only waking when threatened, to go hunt, or when Janos is around. When Janos is around he has a habit of glaring at anyone Janos is talking too, generally giving the impression that he is considering if they are a good meal.
History:
Up until Janos stumbled upon him, Caligo was extremely mysterious, he had been sighted many times, however anyone who tried to tame him were usually scared off before they even got into close proximity, and the 2 brave people who actually tried to mount him made him a couple of good meals. The interesting thing is that he had been spotted all across Westeros, the exception being north of the wall, although sometimes it was hard due to his near nocturnal habits.
When the Bandits who captured Janos found him he was likely sleeping after a meal, leading to them waking him up and angering him.
