Highgarden, once the most beautiful keep in the Seven Kingdoms, was now a sad testament to the horrors of war. It's walls, once white and pure, were blackened from ash. Many of the proud spires that capped its towers were shattered and broken, the casualties of Faith trebuchet. Though the keep remained in loyal Tyrell hands, it was proud no longer. If they survived this war, it would take the Lord Paramounts of the Reach generation to regain their former glory.

Upon arriving at HIghgarden, Ser Maekar camped his army beneath its walls, and detailed the scouts and outriders, creating a series of overlapping concentric circles to represent their areas of search, so that no squad would be out of contact from the others for very long. When he was confident that the camp was secured and the scouts properly ordered, he strode up into the castle proper, seeking an audience with Lord Tyrell.

As Maekar passes through the castle, he sees that the men of the garrison are tired and wary, their armour old, dented and piecemeal and their weapons hardly better off. Loyalist though they may be, the Tyrell men have paid a heavy price in the war. Maekar notices that many are older men or boys a couple of years shy of manhood. He's sure that one of the guards is a girl with her hair cut short to make her look like a boy.
Lord Tyrell is in little better state than his garrison. His silk doublet is old and faded, his face scarred, with his missing eye concealed beneath a stained patch. Tyrell is only a few years older than Maekar's father the king but his hair is entirely grey. His children and other relations gather round. All of them wear faded and stained clothing, some of it probably hand-me-downs. Their faces are drawn and pale, and several look half-starved. Tyrell himself has the frame of a burly man who has not taken sufficient nourishment for a substantial period of time.
But the man's expression lightens as he sees Maekar. "Go away, all of you," he commands. "I must speak with our guest." He shooed off his kin. They hurried off. Then Lord Tyrell turned to Maekar with an expression of sheer relief.
"Is the king coming? It's all my children ask, you know. Every day for months."

"No, my lord, he is not," Maekar replied. "I've been preparing for this campaign for two years, and deemed it the correct time to march from Bitterbridge. I've written to his grace, informing him of my intentions, but have not had a response. His daughter, the Princess Rhaena, marches down the Searoad with two thousand men as well as Lord Valarr of Stonedance and their dragons. When they arrive here, we will move on Oldown."

"Indeed. I pray that this assault is successful. I remember the last only too well." Lord Tyrell spoke with bitterness; had the first battle of Oldtown ended the war, his own house would have suffered far less. "I know Lord Valarr. And Princess Rhaena, you say? Well and good. It will be good to see her too. And what of Highgarden, ser? What part in this for Highgarden and House Tyrell?"

"Have you any men, beyond those it will require to garrison Highgarden? If so, they will march with us when we move southward. I am well provisioned and equipped, but the food from your stores and the steel from your armory will aid our march, when it comes to an end at Oldtown," Maekar replied. "What of the movements of the enemy. What can you tell me?"

"I can spare you a small force," Lord Tyrell replied. "We will need food and weapons for the garrison and household. As to the enemy, I know little and less. They keep to Oldtown and its holdings, mostly, only venturing out to forage or scout for enemies. But I daresay you know that already. The Arbor remains in enemy hands, of course."

"This army will need the stores and arms far more than the men garrisoned here, as you well know, my lord," Maekar said in a tone that implied the royal army would be requisitioning what it needed, regardless of complaints. If it gave him any discomfort speaking so to an older man of significantly higher rank, it did not show on Maekar's face. "Two hundred men will be sufficient to hold Highgarden, the rest of your soldiers will march south with us," he added.
"Make sure they are ready to march in half a fortnight, if you would, my lord for I wish to march south by then; Lord Valarr's host will surely have arrived."

"As you wish. But I will not see my children starve. My youngest daughter is but nine years old. and I've a couple of grandchildren here too." Tyrell sighed in sheer exhaustion. "Take what you need, but leave us enough to live on. I shall send my eldest son to march with you but no more. I have lost a son, a nephew and two goodsons already. I will not lose more."

"If my army were to be destroyed and the Faith were to arrive at your gates, I am quite certain that your insistance that you will lose no more family would stay their hands," he replied dryly. "I have no intention of stripping your home bare, but my men need to be fed," he added with a shrug.
"Is there aught else you need of me, my lord? If not, I shall retire to my camp, by your leave," he added respectfully

"Nothing, ser. We've got a maester - an old man trained before this war began - so you may borrow his services if need be. And gods protect you, ser." He very pointedly didn't say which one but it was well known that the Tyrells were worshippers of the Seven

Maekar was not such a stickler as some; honestly he cared not a whit what gods a man worshipped, as long as their worship did not lead them to rebellion against the crown. When he returned to the army, instead of retiring he mounted Cyrax, flying high above Highgarden on the dragon's back, and scanning the horizons for any hint of his reinforcements, or the enemy's movements.

After the eight day trek from Old Oak, Rhaena eventually arrives with half the numbers Maekar would have expected. She parked the diminished near Maekars and then went immediately up to the castle, to find her brother and tell him of what has happened.

Maekar was visible long before they reached Highgarden, circle the castle high above it on the back of Cyrax. When he spotted Rhaena's banners in the distance, the dragon's wings folded back and it fell to the earth in a steep dive, snapping them open only a few hundred feet off the ground and gliding north and west along the road toward them. It took only a quick count of the banners for him to see that the numbers were significantly lower than he had expected, and as he drew closer he could see the ragged and battle-worn men, who had clearly seen a slaughter not long avon. By the time they made camp outside the castle's walls, Maekar had alighted Cyrax on a field next to the camp, and he quickly found his sister.
When he found Rhaena, he grabbed her in a quick embrace, before releasing her and stepping back quickly, as if he were embarrassed. "What happened, were you attacked on the road?" he asked hurriedly. "Are you alright?"

"The army was attacked on the road before we got there, numbers got halved by death or by wounded," she informed him, not embarrassed in the slightest by the embrace and smiled slightly at Maekar, "It can't have been long..." she said, trailing off with a thoughtful gaze about if she had arrived sooner, "I shan't lie, brother it's been a shitty few days." She looked round again, "to be honest, I am not sure what good they will be, it's half broken, this army, if you had seen what the faith did to Lord Serrett."

Maekar turned his gaze to the men, nodding at her words. "Their strike against Cider Hall must have been a diversion…" he said softly, half to himself. He swore violently, his eyes flashing. "I walked right into it. The Faith will pay for this; we will take our due, with fire and blood."
He closed his eyes for a moment, and Rhaena saw him take a deep, and exhaling slowly. As he did, the anger seemed to bleed out of him, and when his eyes opened again they were clear and calm. "Training and drills will restore morale to the men; with something to do and a purpose they will once again find their spirit," he said to her. "It seems odd, as you would think they would prefer to lie in sloth, but nothing galvanizes a man to fight, light preparing to do so every day for weeks."
"I've had word from father in the capital. Aegon will arrive tomorrow to take command," he said, with only the tiniest hint of bitterness in his voice, "with a flight of dragons behind him, enough to reduce Oldtown to a pile of cinders if we so wish. In the meanwhile come up to the castle, I've had Lord Tyrell draw up rooms for you, and I imagine a bath and a bed will be welcome comforts after the dust of the road."

"A diversion is the gyst of what I thought it must have been, but neither of us were to know. I, at least didn't even know of the force moving before I went to King's Landing," she said, in an even tone, the hand moving to his arm the only real indication it was meant to be comforting.
The news of Aegon gaining command finished that off in a flash, "Father actually gave him the command?" she asked incredulously, shaking her head, but did not say anything more on that subject, The King would know best.
"If it is all the same to you brother, if it is training and preparation the men need, I would rather stay with them while they do it, father left them to me, and I let them get decimated, I can at least attempt to help put them together again."

Maekar nodded, smiling. "As you wish; your presence cannot do anything but inspire them to glory, I am sure," he said sincerely. "I cannot fault the Lord Tyrell for not feasting us while we are here; his stores and coffers are sorely depleted, more so by our arrival. He is sending his heir with us, and perhaps a few hundred men, but not enough to make a difference. It is our dragons that must win the day, when it comes," he said. "If you will excuse me, I must find Trajan for a few moments; father commanded that I speak with him when he arrives. Tomorrow, when Aegon and the rest arrive, I imagine he will call us to council before we march," he said, another dark look momentarily crossing his face. "If you wish anything more of me before then, you'll find me in my pavilion or in the sky."

It is midafternoon of the next day when the first shadow of a new dragon passes over Highgarden. The fast-flying scout wheels back, returning later with Aegon's flight of dragonriders. It is an impressive sight -- eight dragons of various sizes flying together, the massive creatures landing wherever there is room for them. Aegon lands Glutton in what was once one of Highgarden's famed gardens, now only scorched earth, and dismounts.
His siblings could hardly have missed their coming, so Aegon looks around for sign of Maekar or Rhaena.

Elseyris, glad of a smooth journey, swoops Nenyan down into the clearest space she can see.
Looking around in dismay at the ruins of the gardens, she dismounts, and heads over towards Aegon, picking her way carefully through the scorched plants. She says nothing when she reaches him, only glances at him anxiously, awaiting orders.

Having seen them approach Rhaena climbed onto Tyraxes and flew to meet them, stopping near Aegon and raising a hand in welcome.
"Will the gods never stop their tricky ways?" she said to him, not much humour evident in her voice. She did not get off her Dragon after approaching, sitting atop him and looking at Aegon directly, not paying much attention to the others, until she saw Elseyris, and her look immediately darkened, remembering the girl who stood up for the traitor the same time she stood up for the King.

Daenya lands Vandaras not far away, dismounting to go whispers her thanks into her dragon's ear. She was nervous, scared and excited but did not want to let it show.

Maekar was present a massive field, about a mile and a half square, that had been set aside adjacent to the army camp for the dragons to make their own 'camp' on. Cyrax was already there, curled up on the far side of the field apparently asleep, although occasionally one eye would open to survey the land before him before closing again.
A small honor guard of knights was with Maekar when the Prince of Dragonstone landed his dragon on the field, with Maekar's own banner flying beside Lord Tyrell's and the King's own banner above them both. "Welcome to Highgarden, your grace," Maekar said, stepping forward toward the Prince. "Every man in this army will rejoice at the coming of so many dragons."

"Knight Inquisitor," Aegon granted Maekar his formal title, as he had been greeted with his. "I assume you received our bird from the capital." He cast his gaze around the knights and soldiers in the yard, most of them gawking at the dragons. "Let's adjourn to somewhere private. I'm going to need a full briefing on the state of the forces here and what you know about the disposition of the Faith Militant."
Aegon had no idea what Rhaena was talking about, but he gave her a courteous nod. There would be time for catching up once the business of war was done.
