This seemed to be a common question he was getting these days. "His grace would not ask that of me, I don't believe. He is a good judge of character and uses people in manners that best suit them and him. I believe he would recognize that I am the wrong tool for such a vile task." He frowned clearly displeased. "It speaks well of you that you call it that. I dearly hope such a command is never given. One man forcing himself on me will be bad enough." She moved a little closer, her expression thoughtful. "Do you keep any Gods, Lord Commander?"

"I was raised to hold to the Old Gods, as my mother was a Stark, but my mother's gods hold no sway below the Neck." He said softly. "Yourself?"

"I used to keep the Valyrian Gods, but I converted to The Seven shortly before I left for Oldtown."
She felt her ankle throbbing from standing on it too long, and leaned against a nearby post so she could alleviate the pressure on the injured leg.
"When things happen to you that cause you pain, or unhappiness, do you think that the Gods are punishing you, or testing you?"

"No." Brandon replied, "I don't think that. But I can see how the sentiment would be a comfort." He thought of Melody, "but such things as happen in this life can not but be the folly of men, not gods. One would expect, even from the cruelest of gods, some rhyme or reason, or at least awesomeness in the power of their devesation. The pettiness, haphazardness of life suggests to me that our sufferings are our own doing."

"Interesting, though sometimes, we suffer because of others, rather than our own actions, surely?"

"I meant ourselves, as in, mankind, not we ourselves, the individuals." Brandon replied with a slow nod.

"I see. But mankind is made of individuals, with varying motives and destinies, is it not?"
Elseyris tilted her head slightly, intrigued by the conversation;
"So, if we cannot appeal to the Gods for favour, and life is, as you say, haphazard and petty, for what do we live and strive?"

"In the past I have flattered myself to believe that living a life of honor and purpose is sufficient," Brandon said, "although I admit there are days when I struggle to maintain that belief."

"I cannot presume to know your life, but I can say that I think I feel the same, especially now. How do you deal with those struggles?"

"You dedicate yourself and rededicate yourself again. There is nothing to duty but the doing." Brandon replied.

"Surely a person's capacity for suffering is not infinite though. Eventually, the struggle will become too much. Can in not be better to reject the world's pettiness than allow it to strip us of all that we work for?"

"If there is suffering man can not endure I have not yet seen it," Brandon replied. "We are remarkable creatures in that way."

"I am not sure whether that is a good or bad thing," said Elsey, looking off into the distance.
She looked back to him.
"What did you do before you were in the Kingsguard?"

"I don't know those, where are they? Are they in the North?"
Elseyris noticed the small smile escape the usually solemn Lord Commander, and she found it oddly heartening to see that he was capable of it.

"Mountains, in the North. At the headwaters of the White Knife, which flows down to White Harbour. It is a very remote place." Brandon said. "before that I served Prince Maeron, my father, as a knight."

"It's very solitary, which was a fact I appreciated at the time," Brandon said, "And if you have an appreciate for the wild beauty of nature, then there was something to be said for it. But a hard life, and cold."

"Might I ask what it is you seek solitude from?" Elsey asked, with a hint of concern in her voice.

"I beg to differ, Lord Commander," Elsey said with a small, encouraging smile. "You have managed to hold my interest all this time. Someone speaking to me with unbarbed politeness and an engaged mind is a pleasant change."

"Sadly standards for conversation do seem to be set fairly low," He agreed with a polite nod and the hint of a smile.

"Well, when one's company is mostly silent, one cannot help but seek any conversation that presents itself," she said amusedly, though clearly meaning Trajan, lurking somewhere nearby.
"However, I found the discussion of the nature of existence most stimulating, despite it's inherent morbidity. Too many people can only speak of trivial matters. I would rather know a person than a mask. Would you?"
