"Do not mistake what you want to do with what must be done," Aegon was cold, but he struggled to keep a civil tone. "So now you are flying to war?" Aegon asked. That insult must have stung, to effect such a rapid turnabout.

"One of the benefits of sitting the throne is that what you want done and what must be done are one in the same." Maegor asserted, leaning forward upon his desk. "You will be king one day, so I offer you the choice. You can have the command and end this war in the manner I would or sit the throne in my stead while I do it for you, ruling as I would."

Some time after King Maegor has settled down for the evening, Brandon cleared his throat.
"Your Grace, I hoped I might speak to you, as regards your sister Princess Arenya and her ambition?"

//////////////////////////////////// Some time after King Maegor has settled down for the evening, Brandon cleared his throat. "Your Grace, I hoped I might speak to you, as regards your sister Princess Arenya and her ambition?" Maegor glanced over from a comfortably upholstered seat by the fireside, where he had been enjoying some of the pear brandy the Tyroshi ambassador had brought as a gift, as Brandon broke the silence. There had been some initial annoyance when the Lord Commander insisted on tasting the contents first, but His Grace had seen enough assassination attempts to learn to trust his Kingsguard.
"I had hoped having to speak to you on the matter would make her lose her nerve." Maegor said with a grimace. "Very well, let us discuss it."

"Her resolved may have weakened some in our conversation, but I imagine she does not intend to give the matter rest. Were she a man, or were Andal customs different than they are, I should not hesitate. Her blood relation and loyalty to you, and her bond are all advantages it's hard pressed to ignore. Formally, I have to counsel you against the appointment, but then, if you did desire to abolish this backwards custom, now would be as good a time as any." He sighed.
"Perhaps the most politic solution would be to hold some form of challenge, and let fate and the other competitors end her dreams for us. She could not fault you for not appointing her, and the Andals customs are upheld."

"I informed her I would heed your counsel in this matter." Maegor said after some thought, leaning back in the upholstered chair with a sigh. "The position does need to be filled. What sort of challenge do you have in mind, Lord Commander?"

Brandon chewed his lip, "I am uncertain as to that. Obviously expense and the situation precludes any sizeable tourney. I should say give it to the man or woman who brings down The Dragonsbane, if I did not fear Arenya may do something foolish, and we'd be left without a sister or a Kingsguard."

"Have I not promised enough to the man or woman that brings down that bastard?" Maegor asked slamming his first upon the small table beside his chair, goblet jumping. "A fortune, a lordship, and a choice of spouse among the eligible Targaryens. Yet the man still breathes."

"All of which puts a man motivated by ambition against a fanatic dedicated to his Faith. Not a match up where my coin would be spent on the ambitious man," Brandon said, "But it is as you say, there is reward enough for that. I would say wait until battle is done, and hold a tourney to decide, but truly we can not wait. Even more so if you wish to extend Kingsguard to cover any of your relatives, or serve on the field in your behalf, which is another matter we should discuss. As to the challenge, give me leave to do so and I will come up with something."

Maegor nodded solemnly at the prudent advice.
"You have my leave." he intoned. "Find me one worthy to bear the cloak."

"As for the Kingsguard guarding other members of your household," Brandon asked, "Have you thoughts on that? Queen Rhaella has relied principably upon her own champion, and as of now Prince Aegon goes without, for instance."

"It has always been my thought that one that could not protect themselves on the back of a dragon did not deserve the protection of others." Maegor replied, though was noticeably less sharp with Brandon' suggestion as he typically was with the rest of his kin. "I suppose you have a different thought on the matter?"

Aegon grit his teeth and promised nothing. "Do I have your authority to requisition what troops and dragons I can for the war effort?"

"You do." he answered. "It is your war to win or lose."

Aegon bowed very stiffly. "Do I have your leave to go, Your Grace?" As was typical of his conversations with his father, it was difficult for Aegon to disguise the bitterness in his voice.

Maegor waved him off dismissively, already turning his attention back to his letters.

Aegon did not linger. He threw the door to his father's chambers open and strode out, in the mood to hit something.

Brandon nodded put took the matter as ended and the comment as rhetorical. He continued his vigil over the King.

The night before Aemy joined her brother and other kin to fly to Oldtown, she paid her father a visit. She chose to seek an audience after supper, and waited for the Kingsguard to admit her.

She is allowed entry. King Maegor sits at his desk looking over some missives. Unlike with Aegon, he did not set aside his inkpot and parchment nor even raise his eyes to meet his daughter.

Whatever he's reading had better be a threatening letter from the Iron Bank, Aemy thought, irked but unsurprised by the way her royal father received her. After all these years, one would have thought that Aemy would grow accustomed to her father's coldness. She hadn't, though since she had returned victorious from Lannisport two years ago, she had learned to conceal her feelings so well that nobody but her handmaid could read her heart.
"Your Grace," Aemy said, curtseying. "I crave an audience with you."
