Well, we could have a thread where at the end of one arc, the new admin posts the bare bones of their contract and if players see any major problems with it, they are highlighted before play begins.
But yeah, if the captain is a different person they should be accepting the contract.

I strongly disagree that the admin should always control the captain. It should start out that way, sure, but after the original captain is knocked off the successor should be determined by RP. Having admin and captain being controlled by different people is a non issue, we have done similar things successfully many times before.

Either way, we need to have a clear picture of how we are dealing with the captain as the role has to go to someone who has the time to be a major player.

But then what happens to our characters when we take over as admin? Do they just get a broken leg and have to sit that mission out, do they have to die, or do we get to NPC them? I feel like that's more the crux issue of this question, rather than who is the captain of the company.

I see no problem in NPC-ing the character, it's again a case of not being a dick.
And if the problem is EXP rewarding, I guess he'd still be elegible but it would fall under the community to discuss the amount.

Everyone would keep their characters whilst adminning and would continue to play them for the duration. As we're working together rather than against each other, most goals would be shared. Of course that character could still die in battle the same as anyone else's character.

I honestly don't think we need to decide this now. We can just wait until we need to make a decision on replacing the first captain. Right now we are arguing totally on hypotheticals. Much better to have this discussion when we know all the ramifications. It seems like every one agrees the first Commander should be an NPC. Knowing that we can begin.
I think the important discussion needs to be the rules. Cause we really can not start a single thing until we forge our rules.

Aside from the tricky aspect of rolling, I think the green ronin skills and attributes would be ideal here.

Good point, Smith, we're kinda putting the cart before the horse here.

So...is there going to be any room for noncombatant characters here?

I was under the impression we'd already decided that we were starting with an NPC captain as "training wheels" then turning it over to the PCs from there, as the intrigue of winning the election (if we go the democratic route) for the new captain would offer some great intrigue opportunity. Otherwise, when the captain dies it will be pretty odd to have to make a completely new NPC that somehow took the position. Opportunity for advancement should be there and I think it makes the game more exciting. A basic "don't be a dick and reject the contract" rule seems pretty obvious. We're a brand new merc company, so turning down gold shouldn't be an option. If it does happen, I don't see that captain's tenure lasting for long. Seems a sure fire way to earn a mutiny.
As for the admin NPCing his PC, I think we should trust folks to be honest. Obviously if we see any obvious signs of misconduct we should speak up, for example me making my PC kill a whole army Rambo style, but otherwise I think as a community we should trust eah other. I also think the rotating admin system should keep folks honest, as being a player again is always just a contract away.

Every mercenary company needs cooks, quartermasters, camp followers, probably a dozen other jobs.

But in a game like this, I feel like anything other than warrior or fighter would take a second tier position.
EDIT: Okay, I see the point. I guess its the kind of thing where you have to just wait and see, right?

I was actually thinking about a noncombatant character, a bard who works for the company by riding ahead and spying on wherever they're heading to fight.

I just fail to see why the captain should be the admin. That makes zero sense to me. The whole point of being a leader is making the hard decisions and dealing with the consequences for not just yourself but everyone. Making the captain also an omniscient and omnipotent god completely undermines that.
Everyone that wants to should take a turn at admin, but captain should be something earned.

*raises his hand* I'd like to be captain. If only because I already MADE one and almost every post I made with him was retconned out of existence by efforts of certain players to destroy the time-space continnuum in their bid to take the Iron Throne. (NOT an exaggeration.) So I'd like my second chance with Viserys the Fair...

Alright, all this makes sense to me. I like Erik's bard idea, we need someone to write songs to promote our glory and win us new recruits anyway.
Hmm Orys you should certainly give Viserys an outing and fingers crossed he does well!

Petition for the game to not start until Dec 3 or later due to those of us undertaking massive writing projects! Seconded. I am actually trying to do it in 20 days because I'm crazy like that, but I'm sure those who have preordered DA: I or intend to buy it upon release will have some sympathy regarding a December start date. Everything is all kinda happening in a relatively short space of time - World book, then Nanowrimo, then Inquisition, and now we are also discussing this new RP thing as well.

I vote later date, like maybe after major holidays and such have been attended to. Last thing we need at the start of a game is "Nobody can rp because christmas" and it screws the momentum.
