Castle Yronwood is one of the most well-fortified citadels in Westeros, having been captured from the Dornish in 86 AL and granted along with its lordship to Lord Baratheon's uncle, Ser Hendry Baratheon. Lord Hendry re-fortified Yronwood beginning in 89 AL, constructing a second curtain wall in stone that surrounded the existing fortress and sealed the southern entrance to the Boneway. Construction was completed in 94 AL by Lord Hendry's son, Lord Cortnay, who inherited the Lordship of Yronwood in 92 AL when Lord Hendry was poisoned by Dornish spies.
The citadel itself is constructed out of granite, a square boxy building with towers rising from each of the four corners sits in the center of the inner ward, amid the stables, barracks, armory, and the other outbuildings, all constructed of the same stone and enclosed by the inner wall. The outer wall is newer, of the same stone, and loops across the mouth of the Pass broken only by a single massive gatehouse, with a double-portcullis and a massive iron-rimmed oak gate.
There is ample space in the outer ward for a dragon or two, for the citadel was constructed with the intention of housing a massive garrison and army.

The day that the Queen's Festival begins in King's Landing, Prince Lucerys Targaryen arrives aback Vhagar, landing in the outer ward. Daemon Waters and Ser Jacaerys Targaryen of Sun House follow him with their own dragons, and when the three of them land, Lord Cortnay himself comes to the ward to offer his hospitality.

Ser Jaecarys dropped down Aquxax and looked at the large and formidable castle that had been the pride of the dornish principality with a look of excitement on his face.
He bowed slightly as Lord Yronwood approached them, though he remained silent as he was the least ranked of the three dragon riders, even if the young prince had a bastard surname.

Lord Yronwood greeted them perfunctorily, granting them his hospitality and ordering servants to arrange chambers in the south tower, nearest the ward where the dragons were being stabled. After speaking with the Master of Laws for a few moments, he left and returned to the castle, and Prince Lucerys turned back to Daemon and Jacaerys.
"Alright, lads. We're going to make our base here, and run patrols over the Pass. The pair of you will fly together, each day make a circuit west, over Kingsgrave, and then loop north up to Wyl. That ought to have you back here by sundown and if anything is moving in the Boneway you'll see it. I will fly east over the coast, and then south across the desert; the sight of Vhagar should keep any restless Dornish in their holes where they belong."

Daemon returned Lord Yronwood's apathetic greeting with a straight faced nod of his head. He knew his status and if it was not for his mother being the Queen, he would've been ignored completely by the pompous Lord.
He then turned to his uncle, listening to his orders for patrol. Daemon smirked at the vision of the Dornish fleeing from Vhagar. To him this mission seemed so much better than being at the festival.

Ser Jaecarys nodded as he listened to the Master of Laws told him and the young prince their orders.
"What if we encounter the enemy, do we return and report to Lord Yronwood or are we allowed to engage them, since them marching on our soil can be seen as an act of war?"
