The Haunted Forest covers vast swathes of land Beyond the Wall. Stretching north to the Land of Always Winter, it's bordered by the Frostfangs to the west and the Shivering Sea and the Bay of Seals to the east. Weirwoods are more common here than anywhere south of the Wall. Wildling tribes inhabit the forest, living in camps and villages, as well as wild animals. Several rivers encroach into the forest, most notably the Milkwater.

Sven makes his way south of the fist Bearic in tow trotting along behind him. Once he is in the forest he looks for a climb able tree that both him and his bear could climb up on and perch themselves on while Sven was doing his warging.

As they are in a forest, it's not too difficult to find a suitable tree and Sven is accustomed to climbing. He sees a gnarled old tree with several large branches, so he will be able to climb up and he thinks the thickest one might be large enough to hold Bearic.

Sven turns to the tree in question and starts climbing his way up, as he climbs he looks for a nice forked branch that he can nestle himself into comfortably. Bearic follows at his own pace enjoying his own climb up the tree.

He finds his branch easily enough and then has only to wait for Bearic and pray that the biggest branch holds after all. He is perhaps halfway up the tree at this point and has a good view of many more trees, and the Milkwater river.

Sven trusts his bears instinct to go to whichever branch would hold his wait. And he takes the remaining time of his bears climb to take in the scenery and get a sense for any of the birds within his range.

He sees a few birds in the distance, wood pigeons and crows, but there are no birds close by, probably on account of Bearic. The forest looks no different from any other part, and there are no signs of men, either.

Sven waits patiently in the tree watching as his bear goes from pruning himself to sleeping peacefully in the branch that he had chosen. He waits for a bird to fly over where he was so that he could take over it's mind.

None of the birds seem to be flying close, however, so Sven realises that he might have to try enticing one, if he has some food to hand. Or he can leave his tree and move closer to the birds, or just wait longer.

Sven waits patiently again, closing his eyes and relaxing in the cold air of the northern forest. After several hours pass by with no flying creatures, Sven takes a couple of nuts and assorted berries that grow in the wild of the far north and tosses them around the area.

After a short while, the birds begin to venture closer, perhaps sensing that the boy and the bear mean no harm. When one of the crows reaches the bottom of his tree, it's easy for Sven to shed his own skin and slip into the feathered body. He can now see through the bird's eyes. The forest looms up larger now he is living the crow's life but he has the benefit of wings with which to scout the are. He can also see over the treetops.

Sven tests his new wings slightly getting used to the feathery mind of the bird. He beats his new wings to raise himself up equal to where his body was laying tucked into the tree. Seeing himself and getting oriented he flies higher above the canopy to scout out the broad expanse of forest.

At first he doesn't see anything very interesting in the forest but, up in the distance, he sees signs of human habitation, though he will have to risk getting closer if he wants to investigate. That means leaving Bearic behind, of course, since Sven's borrowed bird form can travel faster than the bear.

Since it's not really leaving the bear as he is staying to protect Sven's mindless body. Bird-Sven flies towards the human life to investigate the area from a closer distance.

As the bird gets closer, he sees the unmistakable signs of a human camp. Perhaps fifty men and women are gathered around the fires, with a few children too. Most of them are armed, and they talk freely, without fear.

Sven lands the bird on a nearby tree and gazes at the group of men and other types of camp followers, he looks around at the ground and tries to tell what type of clothing the group was wearing to decide if they where free folk or from the nights watch.

Most of them are in dark clothing but it's a mixture of fur and wool. Where there is armour, little of it is the black ringmail of the Night's Watch, and the little there is has probably been taken from dead men. Most of the armour, where it exists at all, is leather. There are a few steel swords and axes but most of the weapons are horn-tipped spears and bronze axes and the lik. There can be no doubt that this is a camp of the Free Folk.

Birdy Sven chirps happily as the chances were the men where going to join his momma and papa, he then takes to the skies once more and flies south looking in all directions to try and find something else of interest.

Sven sees nothing much of interest yet, but then he is still quite far Beyond the Wall. He knows that the black brothers will be more in evidence further south. At this point, though, he's not likely to see much beyond fellow Free Folk and wild animals. But he isn't tiring yet and may fly on further if he wishes.

Bird-Sven continues flying enjoying the feeling of wind flying through his feathers as he rides the air currents south.

Eventually, of course, Sven starts to tire and grow hungry. He realises that he will need to eat and rest in his bird form and it also occurs to him that his human form will need food at some point too. So he may progress onwards if he wishes, but should probably start looking for food.

Sven flies down to land on one of the low hanging branches of the forest, he starts to look for food that the bird eats and to rest the wings of his feathery vessel.

He recalls that crows frequently eat carrion, which means he'll need to find the corpse of some woodland creature. Fortunately there are frequently men and animals hunting so Sven is confident of victory, though it takes him quite a while to find the corpse of a rabbit, the neck entangled in a snare, seemingly forgotten by the hunter who laid it. But it means that Sven won't go hungry for now.

Sven feasts on the rabbit pecking off bits if meat and tendon and throwing his beak back for the meat to glide down the birds throat. After the meal is finished birdy-Sven flies up to a branch to let the food digest. While he is sitting there he tries to judge how much distance has passed while flying.

He has come a long way but there is no sight of the Wall ahead, so he knows there is still a vast swathe of forest ahead. As far as he can tell, less than a full day has passed.
